Joseph’s Love Story
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. – Matthew 1:19

Why don’t we read a lot about Joseph’s deep and genuine love for Mary? Maybe we tend to see Joseph and Mary as purely Bible characters who had to get married to each other because “God told them so.” It was obedience to God,  and “nothing personal.” Hmmm, but I don’t think so.

Because Mary was pregnant before the marriage was consummated, she could be stoned to death, as prescribed by Levitical laws. But Joseph was not just a righteous man; he was deeply in love with Mary. To “divorce her quietly” meant he might be the one to be accused of impregnating Mary and escaping his responsibility. To save Mary from public shame, he’d be the one to absorb the shame instead. He was ready to make the sacrifice for the one he loved. Then the angel intervened and set everything right!

Is your family or relationship in danger of crumbling just like Joseph’s? As long as someone is willing to make the sacrifice for love, there’s hope. That someone might be you. Then an angel comes to set everything right.

What is God asking you to sacrifice for the love of your family?

Saint Joseph, you know how it feels for a marriage and a family to be under huge crisis. Pray for me and my family. Jesus, give me the grace to make the necessary sacrifice. Amen.

Saint Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, pray for us.

COMPANION

Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary

First Reading | 2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14, 16

Joseph comes from the line of David. He is a silent partner in the work of salvation. Jesus and Mary are more prominent than Joseph in the Gospel accounts, yet he is an important influence on Jesus as his foster father. Let us believe in the importance of the role we have to play in God’s work of salvation. It may be a small role but an integral one. If we do not do it, who will?

4 The Lord spoke to Nathan and said: 5 “Go, tell my servant David, 12 ‘When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. 13 It is he who shall build a house for my name. And I will make his royal throne firm forever. 14 I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. 16 Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever.’ ”

Responsorial Psalm | Psalm 89:2-3, 4-5, 27, 29

R: The son of David will live forever.

2 The promises of the Lord I will sing forever; through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness. 3 For you have said, “My kindness is established forever”; in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness. (R) 4 “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant: 5 Forever will I confirm your posterity and establish your throne for all generations.” (R) 27 “He shall say of me, ‘You are my father, my God, the rock, my savior.’ 29 Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him, and my covenant with him stands firm.” (R)

Second Reading | Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22

Abraham is our “father of faith.” Joseph is our model of faith and trust in God. Even if we know little about him, let us believe that he was a good father to Jesus. Let us ask for Joseph’s intercession that all fathers may truly do their best for their wives and children.

13 Brothers and sisters: It was not through the law that the promise was made to Abraham and his descendants that he would inherit the world, but through the righteousness that comes from faith. 16 For this reason, it depends on faith, so that it may be a gift, and the promise may be guaranteed to all his descendants, not to those who only adhere to the law but to those who follow the faith of Abraham, who is the father of all of us, 17 as it is written, I have made you father of many nations. He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not exist. 18 He believed, hoping against hope, that he would become the father of many nations, according to what was said, Thus shall your descendants be. 22 That is why it was credited to him as righteousness.

Gospel | Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24 (or Luke 2:41-51)

Joseph’s role as the husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus takes many crucial turns. He has to secretly bring them to Egypt to flee from the massacre of the innocents as ordered by Herod. He also teaches Jesus the trade of carpentry and what it means to be a faithful Jewish man. He is a role model for all fathers. Let us ask for his intercession daily.

Gospel Acclamation

Blessed are those who dwell in your house, O Lord; they never cease to praise you.

16 Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. 18 Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. 20 Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. 21 She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” 24 When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took his wife into his home.

Reflect

“Saint Joseph did not do extraordinary things, but rather by the constant practice of ordinary and common virtues, he attained that sanctity which elevates him above all the other saints.” (St. Joseph Marello)

SABBATH

Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Silent Trust, Bold Obedience

At a gathering of seminary alumni, a bishop was asked what he valued most about his formation. The question lingered in his heart for years. Looking back on his journey—41 years as a priest and 18 as a bishop—he realized that the greatest gift he had received was the spiritual discipline of discernment.

Discernment, he explained, is more than just making decisions. It is the fruit of a prayerful life, a practice of seeking God’s will amid life’s uncertainties. He had seen its power, not only in his own life but also in the pages of Scripture—most notably in the life of Saint Joseph.

Like his Old Testament namesake, Joseph the Dreamer, Saint Joseph faced a crisis of faith. Upon learning that Mary was pregnant, he had every reason to be confused, hurt, even angry. Yet, his heart was not ruled by impulse or resentment. Instead, he sought a just and compassionate path, planning to divorce her quietly to spare her from shame.

But Joseph did not act immediately; instead, he “slept on it,” creating space to reflect and listen. And in that silence, God spoke. In a dream, an angel revealed to him a greater plan, one that asked him to embrace Mary and her child with faith and courage. He woke up and, without hesitation, followed God’s will.

The bishop recalled the time when his ordination was unexpectedly delayed. He wrestled with frustration and doubt. But through the guidance of his spiritual director, he chose to surrender his pride and trust in God’s timing. Later, he realized how that delay shaped him in ways he never expected. Discernment, he understood, was about pausing, listening, and allowing God’s voice to guide the heart.

In a world that rushes us into immediate action and quick decisions, we are called to slow down, to listen deeply, and to trust that God’s grace is always at work.

Fr. Toto Cerada, SDB

reflection questions

How might you cultivate the discipline of discernment in your own life? When faced with uncertainty, will you—like Joseph—pause, reflect, and wait for God’s voice before you act?

Lord, grant me the grace this Lent to discern Your will. Teach me to trust Your plans, embrace silence in prayer, and find peace in Your divine guidance. Amen.

Today, I pray for: _______________________________________________
