Feast of St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina

THE TIME IS NOW
There is an appointed time for everything. – Ecclesiastes 3:1

The impact of the pandemic left most of us hanging by a thread—psychologically, financially, and spiritually. My friend Anna had it firsthand. Having lost work, with tons of bills to pay and without a fat bank account, she had to face the uncertainty of the times ahead. She fell into depression and felt powerless. However, being the faithful Catholic and ministry servant that she is, she sought enlightenment through prayers and God’s promises in the Bible.

Before long, she realized an important lesson. Despite the hardships, life continues to offer options and opportunities as long as she doesn’t stop to seek them. She also realized it was OK to uproot herself from her usual grounds to relocate and even thrive in a new territory. And the time is now.

Soon enough, Anne started an online business that supported her financial needs sufficiently. She also found a possible work opportunity that would allow her and her family to settle abroad. Eugene Cailao (euan06@me.com)

What is God asking you to embrace at this appointed time?

Father, may I bask in Your presence and grace so I may accept what You have planned for me.

COMPANION

Memorial of St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina

First Reading | Ecclesiastes 3:1-11

There is a time for everything. However, there seems to be a lack of time to do the things we should be doing. Maybe we do not order our life well. Maybe there are too many commitments to fulfill. There are probably other reasons that contribute to this state of affairs. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will guide us in putting our life in order so we can fulfill our priorities.

1 There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens. 2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant. 3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to tear down, and a time to build. 4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. 5 A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them; a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces. 6 A time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away. 7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to be silent, and a time to speak. 8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. 9 What advantage has the worker from his toil? 10 I have considered the task which God has appointed for the son of men to be busied about. 11 He has made everything appropriate to its time, and has put the timeless into their hearts, without man’s ever discovering, from beginning to end, the work which God has done.

Responsorial Psalm | Psalm 144:1, 2, 3-4

R: Blessed be the Lord, my Rock!

1 Blessed be the Lord, my rock, 2 my mercy and my fortress, my stronghold, my deliverer, my shield, in whom I trust. (R) 3 Lord, what is man, that you notice him; the son of man, that you take thought of him? 4 Man is like a breath; his days, like a passing shadow. (R)

Gospel | Luke 9:18-22

Peter gives the right answer this time. It is interesting that Luke sets Jesus to predict His passion and death right next to Peter who recognizes Him as the Messiah. Jesus wants His disciples to know that He is not the kind of Messiah whom the Jews are expecting. This is one of the reasons the Jewish leaders reject Him and put to death.

Gospel Acclamation

The Son of Man came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

18 Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 They said in reply, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.’” 20 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said in reply, “The Christ of God.” 21 He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone. 22 He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.”

Reflect:
Among the names of Jesus, what is the most important for you? Why?

Uncomplicate Your Relationships

I chanced upon a talk show once and a young showbiz love team was being interviewed. When asked to clarify for the public the status of their relationship, the young girl said, “It’s complicated. Actually, I don’t want a relationship with labels. A relationship should be without restrictions, where you’re free to do what you like.” It would not have been more shocking if it was the boy who said it.

“It’s complicated. No label. A free relationship.” This is the modern-day culture’s idea of a relationship.

In the Gospel today, Jesus asked, “Who do people say I am?” And to the disciples, “Who do you say I am?” Jesus wanted things to be uncomplicated. He wanted a label. What or who am I to you? Am I a teacher, provider, miracle worker, healer, or savior. Whatever it is, He wanted a label. Peter gave the clear label: “You are the Messiah of God.”

Labels are important because they set boundaries. If you love something or someone, you surround it with rules. You protect it with guidelines. You set up boundaries. If something has boundaries, it has an identity. One cannot really love something or someone unknown. One cannot commit to a nonentity. Commitment is only possible to something determinate.

A relationship without a label is no relationship at all. A relationship with no label is the product of a society that is afraid of commitments. A “no label” relationship is the liberal culture’s rationalization for noncommitment. A relationship with no label is a product of a throwaway society. Something that has no label is a thing, something indeterminate. That’s why things with no label is called a variable “X.” And persons are not variables. Persons are valuables.

If you accept the so-called “no label” thing, you’re setting yourself up for abuse and a broken heart. Or maybe you will be the abuser and the breaker of a heart. Fr. Joel O. Jason

reflection question

Label your relationship with God and people. That will mean you want to commit to it.

You are my Messiah, O Lord. You have the words of everlasting life. Amen.
