Reflect: “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)

Lord, You honored women who supported Your missions, and at Your death, You gave us the most beautiful gift—Mama Mary. Thank You!

Sts. Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang and Companions, martyrs, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

Paul urges us all to live in a manner worthy of our calling. This means doing our best to walk as disciples of Jesus in every moment of our lives. He gave us the example when He left the glory of heaven to live as one of us. He stood in solidarity with sinners in order to redeem us.

1 Timothy 6:2-12

2 Beloved: Teach and urge these things. 3 Whoever teaches something different and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the religious teaching 4 is conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid disposition for arguments and verbal disputes. From these come envy, rivalry, insults, evil suspicions, 5 and mutual friction among people with corrupted minds, who are deprived of the truth, supposing religion to be a means of gain. 6 Indeed, religion with contentment is a great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, just as we shall not be able to take anything out of it. 8 If we have food and clothing, we shall be content with that. 9 Those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and into a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge them into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evils, and some people in their desire for it have strayed from the faith and have pierced themselves with many pains. 11 But you, man of God, avoid all this. Instead, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. 12 Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses.

PSALM

Psalm 49:6-7, 8-10, 17-18, 19-20

R: Blessed the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!

6 Why should I fear in evil days when my wicked ensnarers ring me round? 7 They trust in their wealth; the abundance of their riches is their boast. (R) 8 Yet in no way can a man redeem himself, or pay his own ransom to God; 9 too high is the price to redeem one’s life; he would never have enough 10 to remain alive always and not see destruction. (R) 17 Fear not when a man grows rich, when the wealth of his house becomes great, 18 for when he dies, he shall take none of it; his wealth shall not follow him down. (R) 19 Though in his lifetime he counted himself blessed, “They will praise you for doing well for yourself,” 20 he shall join the circle of his forebears who shall never more see light. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus travels and brings His ministry to many places. It is impossible for one person to bring the Good News to everyone. This is why we need to work together as a community—as a Church—to bring the Gospel to all men and women. We need each other’s support. We also need to share the gifts we have given and present the Gospel as creatively as we can.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.

Luke 8:1-3

1 Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God. Accompanying him were the Twelve 2 and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources.

think: Jesus, the Divine Healer, take away my inequities and cleanse me from my sins.

SABBATH

EVERYONE’S GOT A ROLE

In a highly dominant patriarchal society, do women have a place in the ministry of Jesus preaching the good news of the Kingdom? If we look at Jesus’ experiences with women, He dealt with them freely. In fact, He shattered the prejudicial customs of His day.

Today’s Gospel accentuates the unique role of women. In the Philippines, feminist group advocates like Gabriela are making headlines whenever there are cases of injustice against women. As a nation, we are much better compared to Middle Eastern countries in how we promote women’s role in the government. As a matter of fact, we had two women presidents in the past.

Why can’t we have the same equality in the Church? The question presumes that there is an injustice. The Catholic Church promotes equality in terms of the dignity of the human person.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church leaves no room for doubt: Man and woman have the same dignity and are of equal value.” However, the Church also affirms that men and women are unique and different. Man and woman are unique in their sexes, nature, and orientation. And because of this, their functions and roles in the Church ministry also have differences.

Jesus affirms this unique role. He called some women to be His disciples, taking care of the disciples “by providing for them out of their means.” In Jesus’ circle of friends, a few names were mentioned: Magdalene, Joanna and Susanna. Probably they served as laundrywomen, cook, iron lady, if we have to adapt it to our modern context.

Women have a unique role in the Church. Mary, too, found her role in the history of salvation. Fr. Haluendo Amit, OCD

------- REFLECTION QUESTIONS -------

Have you ever thought about your role in the Church? What are you doing to help build it?

Strengthen my desire and will to serve You, Lord, in my own small way. Amen.
