THE MAN

IN THE MIRROR

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” – Luke 6:41

I used to always look at the shortcomings of other people more than their strengths. My wife would always remind me not to do so whenever I would talk negatively about other people.

And you know what? She’s right!

If you think about it, whenever you point to other people and highlight their flaws, only one finger points to them but the other four point back to you.

This is a great reminder that whenever we look at other people’s faults, we should check ourselves four times the more. I thank my wife for constantly reminding me about things like these. She is like a mirror who reveals the truth with no pretensions.

Let us always remember that we are made in the image and likeness of God. Let’s look at how we can change ourselves for the better. And as the lyrics of one of my favorite songs go: “I’m starting with the man in the mirror.” Anthony Rodriguez (anthony.r@svrtv.com)

Reflect: It’s never too late to change our bad habits.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

St. John Chrysostom, bishop and Doctor of the Church, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

Paul is aware of the mercy and forgiveness of God because he was once an ardent persecutor of Christians. Paul has a personal reason to believe in God’s mercy. He knows the power of forgiveness to give witness to the Gospel truth. He exhorts Timothy to promote this message.

1 Timothy 1:1-2, 12-14

1 Paul, an Apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, 2 to Timothy, my true child in faith: grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 I am grateful to him who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me trustworthy in appointing me to the ministry. 13 I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and an arrogant man, but I have been mercifully treated because I acted out of ignorance in my unbelief. 14 Indeed, the grace of our Lord has been abundant, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

PSALM

Psalm 16:1-2, 5, 7-8, 11

R: You are my inheritance, O Lord.

1 Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge; 2 I say to the Lord, “My Lord are you. 5 O Lord, my allotted portion and my cup, you it is who hold fast my lot. (R) 7 I bless the Lord who counsels me; even in the night my heart exhorts me. 8 I set the Lord ever before me; with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed. (R) 11 You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever. (R)

GOSPEL

We are all sinners and so none of us should think we are better than others. We will be judged by the choices we make. Let us avoid falling into arrogance or self-righteousness. Neither of these will help us grow in our faith. Let us accept and treat each other as equals—all in need of God’s mercy and love.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Your word, O Lord, is truth; consecrate us in the truth.

Luke 6:39-42

39 Jesus told his disciples a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? 40 No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’ when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.”

think: “Don’t judge someone just because they sin differently than you.” (Unknown)

SABBATH

THE WAY TO HEALING AND MATURITY

Spiritual direction focuses on spiritual questions—your deep longings, sacred experiences, and your response to what is holy and meaningful in life. It assumes that you pray because it is the raw material for spiritual direction.

On the other hand, counseling focuses more on emotions and behavior that impact your life and relationships. It may also explore past experiences to better understand where the person is coming from. While spiritual direction and counseling are different, they have a common ground. Both are avenues for guiding people.

Today’s Gospel reiterates that those in the business of guiding people, whether through spiritual direction or counseling, have to reach a certain self- realized maturity: “A blind man cannot lead another blind man.” Jesus insists, “First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.”

An unresolved wound could create another wound. No guide operates in a vacuum. The way one facilitates will always have some preset biases.

With a sense of urgency, Jesus invites priests, professors, teachers, and counselors to fix themselves first before tinkering on the soul of other people, to resolve their own personal issues and develop a prayer life.

The path to a healthy and holistic approach to maturity is that we ask help from those who have gone ahead of us in life’s experiences. God does not work in a vacuum. His healing grace works through people guiding other people.

Jesus encourages us to be accountable to someone for that is how the Holy Spirit recreates. When you start humbly looking for someone to talk to, it is a good sign—the first step to the road of healing and maturity. Fr. Haluendo Amit, OCD

------- REFLECTION QUESTION -------

Check yourself if you need someone to accompany you in your healing or spiritual journey, then seek and pray that God lead you to the right counselor or spiritual director.

Lord, I need Your healing grace and guidance in my journey. Amen.
