THANK GOD

FOR ENEMIES

The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure on  the sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him. – Luke 6:7

Many people think that seminary life is peaceful, loving, and totally holy. Well, the least I can tell you is that we’re human beings too. Living in a house with 40 other people, with different temperaments, histories, and values can be exciting, crazy, and terrifying – all at the same time!

Here are snippets of some woes and wins of community life. There are brothers who always complain about the food, and there are those who always go back for seconds and thirds. There are the sporty types, musicians, artists, academics, gamers, and all sorts of subgroups you can think of. But what I love most are the brothers who make me holy.

They are those who test my patience, disagree with my points of view, or who, without their intention, make me feel sad, angry, hopeless. I call them my saving grace. Because of them—I pray more, I discover my deeper personality, I can correct myself and become a better person.

Maybe this is what Jesus meant when He says, “Love your enemies.” He understood that these “enemies” are important in life. They make you grounded. They make you more human. They make you holy. Migs Ramirez (emiguelframirez@gmail.com)

Reflect: Who are your detractors in life? Say a prayer for them today.

Mama Mary, teach me how to live uprightly, so that when people put me down, I may know how to hold on to Jesus. Amen.

St. Peter Claver, priest, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

Paul fills up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ with his own sufferings and trials. Paul is grateful that Christ allows us to share in His sufferings in a real way, such that when we suffer we contribute to the work of salvation, no matter how small. This gives meaning to our suffering and the suffering in the world. Suffering, when united with the sufferings of Christ, manifests His passion and death on the cross to the world. It is as if we are making present sacramentally the sufferings of Christ in and through our own.

Colossians 1:24-2:3

24 Brothers and sisters: I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his Body, which is the Church, 25 of which I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given to me to bring to completion for you the word of God, 26 the mystery hidden from ages and from generations past. But now it has been manifested to his holy ones, 27 to whom God chose to make known the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; it is Christ in you, the hope for glory. 28 It is he whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. 29 For this I labor and struggle, in accord with the exercise of his power working within me. 2:1 For I want you to know how great a struggle I am having for you and for those in Laodicea and all who have not seen me face to face, 2 that their hearts may be encouraged as they are brought together in love, to have all the richness of assured understanding, for the knowledge of the mystery of God, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

PSALM

Psalm 62:6-7, 9

R: In God is my safety and my glory.

6 Only in God be at rest, my soul, for from him comes my hope. 7 He only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed. (R) 9 Trust in him at all times, O my people! Pour out your hearts before him; God is our refuge! (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus cannot stand the hypocrisy of the Pharisees. So He confronts them for their rigidness and lack of mercy. How can anyone think that it is wrong to heal a crippled person no matter what day of the week it is? The Pharisees are enraged over the breaking of the Sabbath by showing mercy to and healing a cripple. What kind of leadership condones this attitude?

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me.

Luke 6:6-11

6 On a certain sabbath, Jesus went into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. 7 The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure on the sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him. 8 But he realized their intentions and said to the man with the withered hand, “Come up and stand before us.” And he rose and stood there. 9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the sabbath, rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?” 10 Looking around at them all, he then said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so and his hand was restored. 11 But they became enraged and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.

think: What Pharisaic traits do you have? How do you change these?

SABBATH

THE BIG DEAL ABOUT THE RIGHT HAND

Roman military culture dictated that foot soldiers hold the shield with their right hand. During meals, they ate with their right hand. Judaism also considered the right hand as the good hand. Left-handedness, like lameness and blindness, was classified as an unfortunate imperfection. Once identified as left-handed, one was automatically disqualified from serving as a priest in the Jerusalem temple.

When I visited Jordan and Egypt, the heavy emphasis on right-handedness still prevails. People pick food from a common dish at mealtimes. The right hand is the “clean” hand for shaking hands, for writing, and for eating. They say that the left hand is used for wiping yourself at the toilet.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus pitied the man with a withered right hand. One of the exemptions of breaking the Sabbath law is when it involves life and death. Jesus affirms this when He said, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy it?”

Jesus saw the man’s withered hand as a life-and-death situation. Why? Because the withered hand was the right hand, which is used for eating. The withered right hand limited the man from fulfilling his basic physiological needs. It has led to his physical deterioration because he could not eat well. Jesus saw this and proceeded to restore the right hand so that the man could begin to eat well.

Jesus was not only culturally sensitive. Instead of a dole-out mentality, He was keen on restoring the man’s basic functions so he could help himself. Fr. Haluendo Amit, OCD

------- REFLECTION QUESTIONS -------

How do you help those in need? Do you just share your resources, or do you take the time to know their real needs?

Dearest Jesus, thank You for giving us a model on how to really help those in need. Amen.
