Solemnity of the Holy Trinity

ECHOLOCATION

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” – John 16:13

When Ben Underwood was two years old, he was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a cancer of both eyes. Four years after his eye surgery, he discovered he possessed this extraordinary gift that enabled him to “see” the world through the click of his tongue. He shared in a VTR in Oprah’s show: “By clicking my tongue, I can find people, poles, pillar, the rocks on the floor.” According to his mom, Ben could play video games, ride bikes, skate, and do everything as if he never lost his sight.

The technical term for this gift is echolocation. Dictionary.com defines it as “the sonarlike system used by dolphins, bats, and other animals to detect and locate objects by emitting usually high-pitched sounds that reflect off the object and return to the animal’s ears or other sensory receptors.”

In our world today, tons of information bombard us daily. Fake news proliferate in cyberspace. False prophets abound, proclaiming a distorted Gospel of Christ. If we are not discerning, the gullible in us may fall into the trap and blind us from the truth. It’s easy to get sidetracked or even get lost.

Let’s invoke the Holy Spirit so we can “echolocate” our way towards the truth. Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com)

Reflect: When we are in a dilemma, whom do we call?

Come, Holy Spirit. Fill our hearts and enlighten our minds. Guide us into all truth. Amen.

St. John Francis Regis, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

True wisdom helps us grow in character and faith. To grow in wisdom, we also need to grow in holiness and virtue. The calling is universal and at the heart of the human project. It is only when we can explain and defend our beliefs that our knowledge becomes wisdom.

Proverbs 8:22-31

22 Thus says the wisdom of God: “The Lord possessed me, the beginning of his ways, the forerunner of his prodigies of long ago; 23 from of old I was poured forth, at the first, before the earth. 24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no fountains or springs of water; 25 before the mountains were settled into place, before the hills, I was brought forth; 26 while as yet the earth and the fields were not made, nor the first clods of the world. 27 “When the Lord established the heavens I was there, when he marked out the vault over the face of the deep; 28 when he made firm the skies above, when he fixed fast the foundations of the earth; 29 when he set for the sea its limit, so that the waters should not transgress his command; 30 then was I beside him as his craftsman, and I was his delight day by day, playing before him all the while, 31 playing on the surface of his earth; and I found delight in the human race.”

PSALM

Psalm 8:4-5, 6-7, 8-9

R: O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!

4 When I behold your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you set in place— 5 what is man that you should be mindful of him, or the son of man that you should care for him? (R) 6 You have made him little less than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor. 7 You have given him rule over the works of your hands, putting all things under his feet. (R) 8 All sheep and oxen, yes, and the beasts of the field, 9 the birds of the air, the fishes of the sea, and whatever swims the paths of the seas. (R)

2nd READING

True wisdom will always help us grow in character—in understanding our humanity and helping others grow as well. God does not wait for us to become holy. He gave us His Son, Jesus, while we were sinners. By His wisdom, God draws us to Himself.

Romans 5:1-5

1 Brothers and sisters: therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, 4 and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

GOSPEL

One of the reasons the Holy Spirit has been given to us is to show the truth of God’s love for us. The truth frees us to live as sons and daughters of God. Come, Holy Spirit, and enkindle in our heart the fire of Your love and lead us to Jesus every day.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; to God who is, who was, and who is to come.

John 16:12-15

12 Jesus said to his disciples: “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. 13 But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. 15 Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”

think: “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you.” (James 1:5, NLT)

SABBATH

HOLY SMOKE

Christian Catholics begin every important act with the sign of the cross, a gesture of honor, worship, and thanksgiving to God. Today, our Sunday liturgy is dedicated to God who revealed Himself as a Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I call attention to the word “revealed” precisely because by our own discernment, humanity could never have conceived a Triune God. We have the mystery of the Trinity simply because Jesus revealed it to us. By human calculations and logic, we cannot understand how three is one and one is three. But God is beyond human calculations and logic. To try and get a hold of the innermost mystery of His being, we could only come up with pale and limited analogies, like water which can exist as liquid, solid (ice), and gas (steam).

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI once wrote about the mystery of God and liturgy. Catholic liturgy makes use of incense a lot. Besides being a visible symbol of prayer that lifts up to heaven, the smoke coming from the incense is meant to confound us, to block our vision, and to remind us that ultimately the mystery of God is something way beyond our limited capacity to see and grasp. We read in the book of the prophet Isaiah, “For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts” (55:9).

In confounding language, Saint Augustine wrote, “Si comprehendus, non est Deus.” It means, “If you understand, it is not God.” What is Augustine saying here? God is not just one thing in the world, nor is He the highest thing in the world. He is beyond our world and we can only behold His mystery so much, like eyes blurred by the lifting up of incense.

On this feast of the Trinity, let us submit ourselves to the mystery of God—a mystery that is not incomprehensible but inexhaustible. When you go to Mass today, smell the incense and allow the smoke to get in your eyes. Fr. Joel O. Jason

-------- REFLECTION QUESTIONS -------

Do you leave room for mystery in your walk with God?

Expand my mind and my heart to the awesome mystery of Your beauty, O Lord. Amen.
