UNWORTHY BUT USED

Not that of ourselves we are qualified to take credit for anything as coming from us; rather, our qualification comes from God. – 2 Corinthians 3:5

“Love more,” God said in the beginning of 2016. So I did. I served more, I gave more, I preached more, I taught more, I worked more. I tried to obey that one simple command to the point of obsession that I got sick. I had to go back to taking maintenance meds for my liver.

Dr. Lubaton, a good friend and also my doctor, said to me, “Karren, you’ve loved us all so much, but you forgot to love yourself.” I couldn’t accept that, so I got angry with God. Is this what I get for loving more? I asked Him one time in prayer. He didn’t answer. So I stopped talking to Him.

But even in my pettiness, God still showed His faithfulness.

One Sunday, while sulking, I got a text invitation to give a talk to Camp Calye, our youth camp. It turned out to be one of the most impactful talks I ever gave. A lot of people came up to me and told me how their lives were changed with one simple talk.

There I was, unworthy, unforgiving, and “unchurched,” but still able to bless so many people. I realized then and there that it wasn’t me. It was all Him. He chooses even the most unworthy of His subjects, and whom He calls, He uses. Whom He uses, He equips. Karren Renz P. Seña (karren.s@shepherdsvoice.com.ph)

Reflect: Do you allow God to continue to use you, in spite of feeling unequipped?

Father, even in my unworthiness, You continue to use me. Grant me the grace to always say yes to You. Amen.

Blessed Jolenta (Yolanda) of Poland, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

Jesus’ faith covenant with us is built on the Spirit of God. It is a relationship empowered and guided by the Holy Spirit. This is why we need surrender and humility in our covenant relationship with God. Relationships are built in the Spirit and not just on words, and are more than mere contracts.

2 Corinthians 3:4-11

4 Brothers and sisters: such confidence we have through Christ toward God. 5 Not that of ourselves we are qualified to take credit for anything as coming from us; rather, our qualification comes from God, 6 who has indeed qualified us as ministers of a new covenant, not of letter but of spirit; for the letter brings death, but the Spirit gives life. 7 Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, was so glorious that the children of Israel could not look intently at the face of Moses because of its glory that was going to fade, 8 how much more will the ministry of the Spirit be glorious? 9 For if the ministry of condemnation was glorious, the ministry of righteousness will abound much more in glory. 10 Indeed, what was endowed with glory has come to have no glory in this respect because of the glory that surpasses it. 11 For if what was going to fade was glorious, how much more will what endures be glorious.

PSALM

Psalm 99:5, 6, 7, 8, 9

R: Holy is the Lord our God.

5 Extol the Lord, our God, and worship at his footstool; holy is he! (R) 6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests, and Samuel, among those who called upon his name; they called upon the Lord, and he answered them. (R) 7 From the pillar of cloud he spoke to them; they heard his decrees and the law he gave them. (R) 8 O Lord, our God, you answered them; a forgiving God you were to them, though requiting their misdeeds. (R) 9 Extol the Lord, our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for holy is the Lord, our God. (R)

GOSPEL

While the Spirit is the essence of our relationship with Jesus, we still need words to convey the truths we embrace to grow in this relationship. Jesus, the Word of God, reveals the truths of our faith and helps us to understand the nature of God. He does this with both words and the example of His own relationship with the Father. The most important witness in our work of evangelization is our personal relationship with God. Words are useful in explaining this to others.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Teach me your paths, my God, and guide me in your truth.

Matthew 5:17-19

17 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. 18 Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place. 19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”

think: How is your personal relationship with Jesus?

SABBATH

LIVING BY THE SPIRIT, NOT THE LAW

One of the temptations that we face as human beings as a result of our sins is the tendency to want to put things in clear and concise categories when it comes to the moral law. This is good if we want to know where we stand on the issue and if we are prepared to only deal with it in a simplistic manner. Paul never says that the Law as such is wrong or dead and gone. The distinction that he tries to make is between living our lives under a legalistic sense of the Law and living according to the Spirit of God’s guidance as to how to apply His law in our lives.

God gave the Law to us through Moses and it has constantly been interpreted and applied in more than three millennia since. However, if our interpretation and application is based only on our human comprehension of the Law apart from the guidance of the Holy Spirit, then we are most likely to drift into a legalistic and very limited interpretation of how we should live as Christians. As we all know, Jesus gave His own personal “twist” to matters of the Law during His ministry and it is this sort of understanding that we need the guidance of the Holy Spirit to help us to discover.

The covenant initiated by Jesus replaces the old one and it is this understanding of the gift of the Holy Spirit that is one of the great innovations of Jesus. Yes, the Holy Spirit was active in the Old Testament; however, through Christ, we now have a share in the life of the Holy Spirit that was only ever dreamt about before the ministry of Jesus.

If Christians are going to live their faith to the full and if they are going to have the impact upon society that we should, it is necessary to live this new life in the Spirit in the fullest way possible. It will free and empower us to be witnesses to the truth in new and exciting ways. Paul’s own life is a testimony to this fact. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

------- REFLECTION QUESTIONS -------

How do you approach questions regarding the Law? Do you tend to be legalistic, or are you guided by the Holy Spirit when you try to understand and apply God’s Law in your life?

Holy Spirit, come into my life in a new way so that I will know how to live according to the mind and will of God. Amen.
