YOU’RE GOD’S

BELOVED

“For the Father himself loves you.” – John 16:27

If you’re a mom, you’ll understand what I’m about to say.

Your baby didn’t come out into the world saying, “Hi, Mom! I love you. You’re the most beautiful person in the world. What can I do to make you happy? A foot massage? A back rub? Breakfast in bed?”

Not a chance. When your baby was born, he didn’t even know you existed aside from being his food supply. All he did was cry and pee and poo. Yet you loved him more than yourself.

Oh, did you breastfeed? Do you remember how that little rascal didn’t even care that your nipple was in horrific pain or bleeding? The hungry tyrant would have sucked all your blood. Yet despite not doing anything good for you, you loved your baby.

I believe a mother’s love is the nearest thing we can ever have to unconditional love.

This is a picture of God’s love for you. Even before you do anything good, you’re already loved.

Cherished. Celebrated. Desired. Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

Reflect: Why do you love God? Why do you pray? Why do you attend The Feast? Why do you go to Mass? I hope your answer is, “Because God loves me.”

Dearest Father, help me to open myself to Your unconditional love. Amen.

St. Justin, martyr, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

We need to work with other people in preaching the Gospel to the ends of the earth. It is impossible for one person or a small group to achieve this. Let us discover how we can help and encourage one another in using our charisms and gifts. We can help enhance our ministries, just like what Apollos, Priscilla, and Aquila did.

Acts 18:23-28

23 After staying in Antioch some time, Paul left and traveled in orderly sequence through the Galatian country and Phrygia, bringing strength to all the disciples. 24 A Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, an eloquent speaker, arrived in Ephesus. He was an authority on the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord, and with ardent spirit, spoke and taught accurately about Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the Way of God more accurately. 27 And when he wanted to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. After his arrival, he gave great assistance to those who had come to believe through grace. 28 He vigorously refuted the Jews in public, establishing from the Scriptures that the Christ is Jesus.

PSALM

Psalm 47:2-3, 8-9, 10

R: God is king of all the earth.

2 All you peoples, clap your hands, shout to God with cries of gladness. 3 For the Lord, the Most High, the awesome, is the great king over all the earth. (R) 8 For king of all the earth is God; sing hymns of praise. 9 God reigns over the nations, God sits upon his holy throne. (R) 10 The princes of the peoples are gathered together with the people of the God of Abraham. For God’s are the guardians of the earth; He is supreme. (R)

GOSPEL

What does it mean to “ask in the name of the Father?” To ask for something in another person’s name is equivalent to being given authority to make that request. Today’s Gospel teaches that if we ask with the authority of the Father and in accordance with His will, we can be sure Jesus will give us what we ask for.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

I came from the Father and have come into the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.

John 16:23-28

23 Jesus said to his disciples: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. 24 Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. 25 “I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. 26 On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. 27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”

think: What have you asked for in the Father’s name? Did Jesus give it to you?

SABBATH

‘ONE WAY’

Hillsong’s “One Way” is one song that never fails to animate people. For the youth that I minister to, this song is a real hit. In all youth events that we play this song, the youth would just dance and sing along with much gusto. The song speaks of one’s recognition of Jesus’ place in our life as we seek to reach our final goal: to be with our God. It tells us that the way to go there is Jesus Himself.

One very touching line that is repeated several times at the end of the song is, “You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We live by faith and not by sight for You. We’re living all for You.” We see in those words Jesus’ role in achieving this goal. And that the journey towards achieving it is by living or walking by faith, not by sight. I believe this is why the song resonates well with our youth. It animates them not only because of its catchy and bouncy tune, but also because it shows them how to conduct themselves as they embark on this journey as young members of society still finding their way in this chaotic world. And that way is by walking with faith, not by sight.

The song poses a challenge: there are just so many things that you cannot fully explain and grasp now. The many problems that weigh you down now may take a while to find solutions. Issues about life and living will continue to baffle you and keep you at your wit’s end. So, embark on your journey by conducting yourself such that you will walk by faith and not by sight. You will continue to follow God even if the world tells you it is not worth it. You will continue serving God even if evidences of His existence tell you to do otherwise. You will continue to be good even others continue to be bad.

But, wait! Take heart. For Jesus promises something for you as you live this particular way. In the end, there will be fullness of knowledge. You will have the understanding that has been denied you. For that time will come when everything will be revealed to you. And on that very day, as Jesus asserts in today’s Gospel, you will no longer ask Him anything. For He will provide you with full knowledge and understanding. Fr. Sandy Enhaynes

------- REFLECTION QUESTION -------

What is it about Jesus that is not clear to You? Ask for the grace to understand.

Lord Jesus, I seek to know You and love You more. Amen.
