DYING TO LIVE

If we died with him, we will also live with him. — 2 Timothy 2:11

“If you want to follow Jesus, you must die to yourself,” they always say during prayer conferences. In the presence of an entire congregation high on worship and the Holy Spirit, it’s easy to shout, “Amen!” But you would only realize the breadth and depth of this call when you are in a situation that requires you to sacrifice for others.

I learned this lesson when I had to juggle two full-time jobs, one permanent consultancy, and a few speaking engagements all at once. I knew I had to help with our expanding family business. But in my heart, I knew that I wasn’t called to resign from my current job at Shepherd’s Voice Publications, even if I was ready to give it up if God willed it so.

But His voice was clear at the time: “You will not give up anything. Stretch!” He said. So stretch I did. Some days I was so tired, I remember collapsing on the floor when I arrived home. I slept there for almost 30 minutes. But no matter how exhausted my body was, my heart and soul held on to the Lord. I lived on His grace, one day at a time. It is only when we truly die to ourselves that the grace of God can be put to work in our lives. Karren Renz Seña (karren.s@shephersdvoice.com.ph)

Reflect: In what ways are you being called to die to yourself? Ask the Lord for the grace to submit to this call.

Father, even as we die, help us to always look to You, so that we may find the grace to live, serve, and love every day. Amen.

St. Willibald, bishop and missionary, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

God is faithful in fulfilling His promises. True faith in God sets our lives on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ. We stand on shaky ground if we fail to let His grace work within us. Let us open our hearts to the revelation of God’s will and share the Good News to the world.

2 Timothy 2:8-15

8 Beloved: Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David: such is my Gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. 10 Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, together with eternal glory. 11 This saying is trustworthy: If we have died with him we shall also live with him; 12 if we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him he will deny us. 13 If we are unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself. 14 Remind people of these things and charge them before God to stop disputing about words. This serves no useful purpose since it harms those who listen. 15 Be eager to present yourself as acceptable to God, a workman who causes no disgrace, imparting the word of truth without deviation.

Psalm 25:4-5, 8-9, 10, 14

R: Teach me your ways, O Lord.

4 Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me your paths, 5 guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior. (R) 8 Good and upright is the Lord; thus he shows sinners the way. 9 He guides the humble to justice, he teaches the humble his way. (R) 10 All the paths of the Lord are kindness and constancy toward those who keep his covenant and his decrees. 14 The friendship of the Lord is with those who fear him, and his covenant, for their instruction. (R)

GOSPEL

Loving God with all our heart paves the way for discipleship. As disciples, our hearts and minds are focused on the Good News, the promise of salvation — we breathe, live, and move the Gospel. Let us open our hearts to the work of conversion. Then, it is easier to follow Jesus.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life to light through the Gospel.

Mark 12:28-34

28 One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” 29 Jesus replied, “The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! 30 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, He is One and there is no other than he. 33 And to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

think: How do you give your all to God, who is our All?

SABBATH

JESUS’ STANDARDS OF LOVE

Many people say I am not an affectionate person. They don’t see much of my emotions in many situations and I cringe at being touchy. Thus, many conclude that I am not a loving person. Worse, others follow it up by saying that I am not a real spiritual person because of that trait. To that I cry, “Ouch!”

When someone came up to Jesus to verify His teachings, He readily pointed out the centrality of His message, that love of God goes together with love for others. He wants people to realize that this love is something concrete and not just something for show. It is the kind of love that reveals the presence of God to those who live it out because of a real witness from the heart. It is an act that does not scream or brag to others that it has been done. Jesus did not witness to those kinds of acts. He witnessed to love by being love Himself.

It is easy to speak and preach about love, but how far have we lived it according to the standards of Jesus? Let me give some proposals by the founder of the Focolare Movement, the Servant of God Chiara Lubich: (1) love everyone; (2) be the first one to love; (3) love your enemies; (4) love the other as yourself; (5) be in communion with the other; (6) see the person of Jesus in the other; and (7) live the reciprocal love.

In my life, I struggle a lot to keep a balance of my weaknesses and sinfulness. But I still try to love as concretely as I can. It might not be seen as often as others would want to, but I challenge myself to make it as the foundation of my life in God. Hard? We will fail again and again, but Jesus gives us the chance to start again. Fr. Joel Francis Victorino

------- REFLECTION QUESTIONS -------

How do you concretely love God and others in your life? Can you name one experience of this love every day as an offering to Him?

Deepen my love for You and others, Lord, and help me to manifest it in my daily life. Amen.

Today, I pray for: ____________________________________
