A LESSON ON

HUMILITY

“But you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.” — Mark 12:14

As a lover of the written word even at an early age, it was a dream come true for me to be part of a Literature class taught by a renowned professor. With every assignment, I was determined to prove that I belonged there.

As my high marks increased, so did my arrogance. My seatmate, who was failing miserably, asked for my help midway through the semester. I worked with him for a week on his next essay and paid less attention to mine, assuming that whatever I would write would be exceptional compared to other submissions.

When our grades were returned to us, I was shocked to see a large C scrawled on my paper while my seatmate received a B+. When I asked my professor for an explanation, he gave me a lesson on humility instead. “Life is mandated by expectations. He wanted to be better so he sought advice and this is the best work he’s produced so far,” my teacher said. “On the other hand, I have to raise my expectations of you because I know you can do so much more. Strive to be excellent always; do not take your potential for granted.” Eleanore Teo (elyo.lee@gmail.com)

Reflect: Do you constantly compare and compete with others?

Lord, do not let my triumphs overshadow my humility and let every next step I take be more determined than the last. Amen.

St. Boniface, bishop and martyr, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

Peter warns us to guard against sin, temptation, and the lures of the devil. Caught unaware by his insidious ways, the devil can divide and conquer us. Parliaments and congresses around the world pass legislation for euthanasia and same-sex marriage. This is a sign that we need to be more vigilant in thwarting the devil’s tactics. Let us pray for the grace to listen to the voice of God – the voice of life.

2 Peter 3:12-15, 17-18

12 Beloved: Wait for and hasten the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire. 13 But according to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace. 15 And consider the patience of our Lord as salvation. 17 Therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, be on your guard not to be led into the error of the unprincipled and to fall from your own stability. 18 But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Psalm 90:2, 3-4, 10, 14, 16

R: In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.

2 Before the mountains were begotten and the earth and the world were brought forth, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (R) 3 You turn man back to dust, saying, “Return, O children of men.” 4 For a thousand years in your sight are as yesterday, now that it is past, or as a watch of the night. (R) 10 Seventy is the sum of our years, or eighty, if we are strong, and most of them are fruitless toil, for they pass quickly and we drift away. (R) 14 Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days. 16 Let your work be seen by your servants and your glory by their children. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus reminds us in today’s Gospel that we are citizens of both heaven and earth. There will be times when we need to attend to worldly matters. We must remember, however, our citizenship in heaven. Let us be good Filipinos and pay our taxes, abide by the law, and serve our country, keeping in mind that heaven is our ultimate goal.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts that we may know what is the hope that belongs to his call.

Mark 12:13-17

13 Some Pharisees and Herodians were sent to Jesus to ensnare him in his speech. 14 They came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion. You do not regard a person’s status but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?” 15 Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them, “Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius to look at.” 16 They brought one to him and he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They replied to him, “Caesar’s.” 17 So Jesus said to them, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” They were utterly amazed at him.

think: Being a Christian means being a good citizen of our country. How are you doing?

SABBATH

NO DIVISION

One evening, I was having dinner with two good friends. Suddenly, one of them blurted out, “Father, I can’t understand why the Church has to be too involved in politics! Can’t we just tell our bishops to stop meddling in the affairs of the government, of which they don’t even have an idea what it is all about?” My friend was calm as she said this, but one could see in her eyes that she was genuinely irritated. I will not spend time telling you how things went, but we ended dinner enjoying each other’s company.

What I experienced is something normal now. A number of people can’t help but be vocal about this misperception of the Church. Others say that the Church should mind its own business since it could not even solve its own problems.

Is this essentially what the Gospel today is all about? Did Jesus really mean to compartmentalize our lives? When He said, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s,” does this mean to separate the civil and the religious spheres? If we hold on to this mentality, we need a paradigm shift. Why? Because things are not as easy — one takes care of this since he has authority over that realm, while the other takes care of another because he was trained to do it.

Jesus’ words did not make distinctions of how far involvement can be. He knew the intentions of those who came to ask Him. Thus, He responded accordingly. But we also need to understand the morality involved in all these. There will always be talk of good and bad, of right and wrong, and things divine and evil. We can allow things freely because others said it is beyond our competency. It is the moral responsibility of every good Christian to speak about what God wants and has formed in our doctrines and conscience. We speak not for ourselves but for the conscience that God allowed us to have in order to be led to His truth. Fr. Joel Francis Victorino

------- REFLECTION QUESTIONS -------

Do you stand with the Church whenever its leaders speak on issues that have moral bearing in our society? Why or why not?

Lord, grant us courage to speak out when society tramples on Your Church and Your teachings. Amen.
