CHOOSE LOVE

To knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness. — 2 Peter 1:6

Marivi planned to return to Pangasinan to celebrate her mom’s birthday on July 2. But on the evening of June 27, she got a call that brought shocking news — her mother was dead. A robber stabbed her and stole her things.

Marivi rushed to the province and met the suspect who turned out to be an 18-year-old woman. Silence ensued as Marivi looked at the suspect intently while she avoided eye contact. Marivi prayed for God’s guidance when she went home. She felt God say, “See her as I see you. Look at her with love and mercy, the way I look at you. Bring her to me because you are both my children.” The message made her cry. She wanted to complain to God but she knew He had spoken.

The following day at the police station, Marivi noticed that the suspect was in a more remorseful state. She said sorry several times. She gave the police more information about those who were also part of the crime. Marivi gave her a rosary, taught her how to pray, and prayed over her before leaving the police station.

Marivi chose to love and forgive at the most difficult time. She decided to be merciful as God was always merciful. Alvin Fabella (alvinfabella@yahoo.com)

Reflect: God calls us to pray for everyone, including our enemies.

Lord, help us to choose love instead of hate.

Blessed Angeline of Marsciano, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

According to Peter, what begins with faith ends with love and passes through this progression: faith–virtue–knowledge–self-control–endurance– devotion-mutual affection–love. Have we grown in these virtues? Let this list be a good place to start for discipleship.

2 Peter 1:2-7

2 Beloved: May grace and peace be yours in abundance through knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 3 His divine power has bestowed on us everything that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and power. 4 Through these, he has bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that through them you may come to share in the divine nature, after escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, 6 knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion, 7 devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love.

P S A L M

Psalm 91:1-2, 14-15, 15-16

R: In you, my God, I place my trust.

1 You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, 2 say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (R) 14 Because he clings to me, I will deliver him; I will set him on high because he acknowledges my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in distress. (R) I will deliver him and glorify him; 16 with length of days I will gratify him and will show him my salvation. (R)

GOSPEL

We reject Jesus, the cornerstone, every time we fail to trust in His promises. We are just like the tenants in today’s Gospel. Let us pray for the grace to build our lives on Jesus, the cornerstone of our faith. May we grow to trust in Him more each day.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Jesus Christ, you are the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead; you have loved us and freed us from our sins by your Blood.

Mark 12:1-12

1 Jesus began to speak to the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and left on a journey. 2 At the proper time he sent a servant to the tenants to obtain from them some of the produce of the vineyard. 3 But they seized him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Again he sent them another servant. And that one they beat over the head and treated shamefully. 5 He sent yet another whom they killed. So, too, many others; some they beat, others they killed. 6 He had one other to send, a beloved son. He sent him to them last of all, thinking, ‘They will respect my son.’ 7 But those tenants said to one another, ‘He is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 So they seized him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. 9 What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come, put the tenants to death, and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not read this Scripture passage: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; 11 by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes?” 12 They were seeking to arrest him, but they feared the crowd, for they realized that he had addressed the parable to them. So they left him and went away.

think: How have you rejected Jesus? What can you do to make it up to Him?

SABBATH

UNSETTLING WORDS

What irritates me? Oh, so many things! It might be someone who lost an item that I entrusted to him for safekeeping. Or it could be telling another person to do something so practical and yet continues to act dumb when everyone else knows what to do. But what really makes me angry is when I am at fault myself. I am so used to my personal beliefs and desires such that when another person challenges that mindset, I get angry. After reflection, I realize the goodness and wisdom of what was told to me. I got angry because the good that was shown to me threatened what I held on to. Thus, I always try to listen and let go.

A number of people who listened to Jesus as He told of the parable today were unsettled by His words. Why? Their power and authority were challenged by someone of lesser stature. They were angry because Jesus knew the evil that prevailed in them and they could not let go of this. In fact, they plotted all the more to have Jesus eliminated. He could not be the stumbling block to their dreams and careers.

Is this not the same for us? Why do I find myself so angry whenever “good” things were pointed out to me that challenged my own set of beliefs and wants? Why are we threatened by people and situations that challenge us? We even come to a point of “demonizing” others even if what they tell us comes from pure wisdom of heart.

Jesus spoke not to spite people. Yes, His words sharply pierce the heart but there is a need to do so. Because we have become too comfortable with ourselves, we need to be told what is evil in us — what is not right or good. In the process, we hope to be challenged to embrace a more meaningful life with Him — He who gave up everything for us and will continue to do so. Fr. Joel Francis Victorino

REFLECTION QUESTION

How do you respond when someone challenges your own beliefs and ways of doing things?

Grant me the grace, O Lord, to accept criticisms and corrections with an open mind and heart. Amen.
