 THE SHEPHERD'S VOICE

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27

In one session of Power Mornings, a breakfast prayer gathering of entrepreneurs and executives held every other Wednesday in Makati, I was asked, “How do you know that God speaks to you?”

I shared that God speaks to me during my 3:30 a.m. prayer time. I start by humbling myself and keeping still for several minutes, focused on Jesus. I read God’s written word, or logos, in Didache or Sabbath using my logical mind. I then say the Scripture verses aloud and read them again in silence. This is when God gives me insights or rhema, which are impressions and feelings inside my heart. I then shout out for joy or cry out my prayers and petitions to God.

Every day, I listen to Him during my quiet time. I know it is God’s voice as I see Him with the eyes of my mind and feel Him in my innermost being.

For me, the voice of God is the spontaneous thoughts that enlighten your mind while you are focused on Jesus. Dean Pax Lapid (mentors@lead-more.com)

Reflect: Prayer is a two-way communication system that binds us together in God’s love. How can you hear Him if your line is busy or distracted?

Thank You, Father God, for always responding to our call. As we empty ourselves in silence, fill us with Your love and mercy.

St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, priest and martyr, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

The people fled far and wide to avoid death brought by the persecution of the Early Church that began with Stephen. This meant that the Gospel quickly moved out of Jerusalem. Wherever the Christians went, they established communities or Churches of the faithful. Let us also bring the Gospel with us wherever we go.

Acts 11:19-26

19 Those who had been scattered by the persecution that arose because of Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to no one but Jews. 20 There were some Cypriots and Cyrenians among them, however, who came to Antioch and began to speak to the Greeks as well, proclaiming the Lord Jesus. 21 The hand of the Lord was with them and a great number who believed turned to the Lord. 22 The news about them reached the ears of the Church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to go to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord in  firmness of heart, 24 for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. And a large number of people was added to the Lord. 25 Then he went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a large number of people, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.

Psalm 87:1-3, 4-5, 6-7

R: All you nations, praise the Lord.

1 His foundation upon the holy mountains 2 the Lord loves: The gates of Zion, more than any dwelling of Jacob. 3 Glorious things are said of you, O city of God! (R) 4 I tell of Egypt and Babylon among those that know the Lord; Of Philistia, Tyre, Ethiopia: “This man was born there.” 5 And of Zion they shall say: “One and all were born in her; and he who has established her is the Most High Lord.” (R) 6 They shall note, when the peoples are enrolled: “This man was born there.” 7 And all shall sing, in their festive dance: “My home is within you.” (R)

GOSPEL

We go where we will be spiritually fed. When we thirst for a deeper conversion, nothing can stop us from quenching it with good doctrine and sound practice of the faith. Let us pray for the grace to grow in our faith through prayer, study, and good teaching.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me.

John 10:22-30

22 The feast of the Dedication was then taking place in Jerusalem. It was winter. 23 And Jesus walked about in the temple area on the Portico of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you and you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify to me. 26 But you do not believe, because you are not among my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand. 30 The Father and I are one.”

think: Do you hear Jesus’ voice, especially when you pray? What other “voices” distract you from listening to Him?

SABBATH

HOLY WAITING

A man posted this on his Facebook wall: “My wife said she is leaving me because I am too impatient. I can’t wait.”

Patience is not one of modern man’s virtues. Technological advance has made waiting a thing of the past. But today’s Gospel reveals to us that impatience is as old as the New Testament. Jesus came to inaugurate the Kingdom of God. With His preaching and miracles, Jesus was slowly planting the seeds of the Kingdom which He will inaugurate in His own proper time. But the people of His time demanded immediate revelation. “‘How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly,’ they demanded” (v. 24).

Actually, impatience is as old as creation. In the book of Genesis, we read that man was created in God’s image and likeness (see Genesis 1:26-27). From the very start, God willed for man to share in the divine life. Man will become like God, but in His terms, and in His proper time.

The serpent would have none of that. One day the serpent approached the woman and planted in her heart a distrust in God’s goodwill. He tricked the woman into thinking that God was holding something from them. In essence, the serpent tempted the woman into thinking that if she wanted the divine life, she should grab it from God and not wait, for He has no intention of sharing it with her. The first woman succumbed into the temptation, and the husband too eventually.

This is why Mary has always been known as the New Eve. Mary undid Eve’s mistake. She taught us to trust once again in the goodwill of God. In Mary, God’s plan to fill us and share with us the divine life came into full display. Mary bore within her the divine life, Jesus, the Word made flesh, not in an attitude of grabbing but of waiting: “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38).

Mary conceived and welcomed the divine life in a posture of receptivity and not aggressiveness. Fr. Joel O. Jason

------- REFLECTION QUESTION -------

What characterizes your attitude towards God and others — receptivity or aggressiveness?

I am Your maidservant, Lord. Let it be done unto me as You say. Amen.
