LIFE SOURCE

“I am the bread of life.” – John 6:48

A successful entrepreneur has a wife who suffers from depression. She travels the world and buys everything she wants, yet she remains unhappy. She’s been depressed for many years. She goes to counseling and regularly sees a psychiatrist, but she’s still depressed.

This is a sad reality. It happens to a lot of successful people all over the world. What’s the root cause? It’s spiritual malnourishment.

One night, when the woman felt so sad, she started calling out to God. She fell down on her knees, cried buckets of tears, and  finally surrendered her depression to God. This was the turning point of her life. When she started having a relationship with God, she realized her purpose, and it gave her life new meaning. She started to use her money to help the poor. And she nourished her life with God’s Word, the Bread of Life.

When we forget about God and our purpose, our life loses its meaning. A life without meaning is an unhappy one. Joel Saludares ( joelsaludares@yahoo.com)

Reflect: Are you so busy acquiring worldly riches that you have forgotten about the true Source of life?

Lord, may I always remember to partake of the Bread of Life. My life has no meaning without You.

COMPANION

1st READING

Philip baptizes the Ethiopian eunuch and then is miraculously brought to Azotus. Maybe God teaches us through this miracle how committed He is to bring the Gospel to the world. He wants everyone to hear the Good News. Let us pray for more men and women to be willing to serve in the Lord’s evangelistic work.

Acts 8:26-40

26 The angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, “Get up and head south on the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza, the desert route.” 27 So he got up and set out. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court of official of the Candace, that is, the queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury, who had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and was returning home. Seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 The Spirit said to Philip, “Go and join up with that chariot.” 30 Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 He replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” So he invited Philip to get in and sit with him. 32 This was the Scripture passage he was reading: Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opened not his mouth. 33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who will tell of his posterity? For his life is taken from the earth. 34 Then the eunuch said to Philip in reply, “I beg you, about whom is the prophet saying this? About himself, or about someone else?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth and, beginning with this Scripture passage, he proclaimed Jesus to him. 36 As they traveled along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look, there is water. What is to prevent my being baptized?” [37] 37 38 Then he ordered the chariot to stop, and Philip and the eunuch both went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 When they came out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, but continued on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip came to Azotus, and went about proclaiming the good news to all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

Psalm 66:8-9, 16-17, 20

8 Bless our God, you peoples, loudly sound his praise; 9 He has given life to our souls, and has not let our feet slip. (R) 16 Hear now, all you who fear God, while I declare what he has done for me. 17 When I appealed to him in words, praise was on the tip of my tongue. (R) 20 Blessed be God who refused me not my prayer or his kindness! (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus affrms that He is committed to give His life for our salvation. Are we willing to serve the Gospel? Let us ask the Lord for the grace of a long and fruitful life living the Gospel and sharing it with the world.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

I am the living bread that came down from heaven, says the Lord; whoever eats this bread will live forever.

John 6:44-51

44 Jesus said to the crowds: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. 46 Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; 50 this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

think: “His Body is the true food in the form of bread; His Blood is the true sustenance in the form of wine. It is not a simple form of nourishment to sate our bodies, like manna; the Body of Christ is the bread of the last times, able to give life, eternal life, because the substance of this bread is Love.” – Pope Francis

SABBATH

 BE HOSPITABLE

In today’s First Reading, Philip was inspired by the Holy Spirit to approach an Ethiopian eunuch who stumbled upon the book of the prophet Isaiah. An Ethiopian eunuch was a pagan, a nonbeliever. So Philip asked him whether he understood what he was reading and the Ethiopian eunuch replied, “How can I... unless someone explains it to me?” (Acts 8:30-31, NIV). Philip did, and right there and then, the Ethiopian eunuch asked to be baptized in the nearest body of water they chanced upon (see vv. 36-37).

This reminded me of this story. Every Sunday, John and Kevin go out of the door almost at the same time. John always goes to Mass while Kevin always goes to the golf course. Kevin always invites John to join him but John always replies, “No offense but the Mass is the most important thing to do for me on a Sunday.” One Sunday, after John declined his invitation for a game of golf, Kevin said, “If the Mass is very important, how come you never invited me to go to Mass with you?”

Many people do not get to experience the beauty of the Mass simply because no Mass goer has ever invited them. Sometimes, evangelization begins with a simple question, “Do you understand what you are reading?” or by a simple invitation, “Would you like to attend Mass with me?”

My interest to become a priest was aroused not because I heard an eloquent discourse on the priesthood. It all started from a simple invitation from a man who saw me serve at Mass and asked whether I wanted to be a priest someday.

Evangelization is achieved not so much by capability as by hospitality. Evangelization is served not so much by men and women who are capable but by men and women who are hospitable, that is, joyful Christians who want to share the joy of Christianity. Fr. Joel O. Jason

------- REFLECTION QUESTION -------

When was the last time you went out of your way to invite others to share the joy found in practicing your faith?

Enkindle in my heart the joy of the Kingdom and let me share it with joy to others. Amen.

Today, I pray for: _______________________________
