Second Sunday of Easter

RECEIVE HIS PEACE

Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” – John 20:21-22

Every day we meet people with different stories to tell: A friend who lost her long-awaited baby. Couples who have been told by doctors they will not conceive. A relative aflicted with a serious disease. A boy struggling with addiction to drugs. A teenager with an angry heart.

Sometimes, the circumstances behind their stories are shameful and burdensome. Sometimes, their problems are overwhelming and seem impossible to overcome. When this happens, our affected brothers and sisters can go through periods of doubt and despair. They may lock themselves up in fear, closing their hearts to well-meaning loved ones. All hope seems gone.

Today, the Gospel reminds us that Jesus is alive. He comes to us with His peace. He calls us to share it with those who need it the most. He does not expect us to work miracles — cure sickness, heal wounds, or solve problems — but He wants us to reach out, listen, understand, and care. As we give of ourselves in love, may the Holy Spirit, our Comforter and Guide, lead us and our loved ones to the peace that only He can give. Geraldine Gabriel Catral (catral.geegee@beaconschool.ph)

Refect: How can you share God’s peace with those around you?

Come, Holy Spirit, empower me to encounter You in others today.

St. Julie Billiart, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

We need to rediscover what it truly means to live in a community of faith. The world has become individualistic and the people self-centered. We have lost sight of the fact that relationships are essential to a fulfilled life. Secular society has made gods out of money and successful careers. Sadly, we neglect to spend time with those who matter to us — our family and friends.

Acts 4:32-35

32 The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. 33 With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. 34 There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, 35 and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need.

P S A L M

Psalm 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24

R: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting.

2 Let the house of Israel say, “His mercy endures forever.” 3 Let the house of Aaron say, “His mercy endures forever.” 4 Let those who fear the Lord say, “His mercy endures forever.” (R) 13 I was hard pressed and was falling, but the Lord helped me. 14 My strength and my courage is the Lord, and he has been my savior. 15 The joyful shout of victory in the tents of the just. (R) 22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 23 By the Lord has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. 24 This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it. (R)

2ND READING

We will overcome the world and its temptations through our faith in Jesus Christ. We need faith to live a fulfilling life. Today’s reading reminds us that the Spirit of God will testify to this truth. Let us pray for the grace to deepen and enrich our faith in Jesus.

1 John 5:1-6

1 Beloved: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the father loves also the one begotten by him. 2 In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4 for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith. 5 Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and the Spirit is truth.

GOSPEL

Let’s admit it – we probably would have reacted the way Thomas did. It is natural to doubt a story that is relayed to you because you did not experience or see it firsthand. Let us be compassionate to Thomas as we reflect on today’s Gospel. After all, he was honest enough to admit his doubts about the Risen Christ.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me, says the Lord; blessed are those who have not seen me, but still believe!

John 20:19-31

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” 24 Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. 31 But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

think: Do you subscribe to the saying, “To see is to believe”?

SABBATH

  TAKE OFF YOUR MASK

A middle-aged woman had a heart attack on the operating table and died. She asked God if that was it. He said, “No, you have 30 more years.” So she was sent back to earth. Upon recovery, she figured 30 years is a good time to have a fun life, and so she had a major facelift, a tummy tuck, liposuction, and an extreme makeover. Two months later, as she was leaving the hospital, she got hit by a car and was killed. She went to heaven and said, “God, I thought You said I had 30 more years.” And God said, “I’m sorry. I didn’t recognize you.”

In my early years in the seminary, I wanted so much to impress the seminary fathers, I made sure I followed every rule in the formation handbook. I wanted to be a model seminarian. at resulted to me rather being quite sti and regimented and almost inauthentic. I could not forget what my spiritual director told me one evening, “Lighten up, Joel. Be yourself. God wants to redeem who you are, and not who you wish to be.” Game changer.

I began being vulnerable, exposing my wounds to the painful but healing balm of God’s grace and the seminary formation. I felt insecure but free. It was when I took on the stance of vulnerability that I felt the grace of God slowly shaping and forming me.

In the Gospel today, the Risen Jesus appeared to the Apostles gathered in a room. ey were afraid, vulnerable, feeling guilty that they deserted Jesus. Jesus gave them a message of peace. And then the irony of ironies, it was when the Apostles felt their sinfulness the most that Jesus gave them the power to absolve sins. He said, “If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven” (John 20:23, NIV).

Before God, we need not wear masks. We need not put on pretentions. We are loved in our ugliness. Let us take o our masks, not in an attitude of de ance but in a posture of vulnerability. You see, God cannot save who we pretend to be. Fr. Joel O. Jason

------- REFLECTION QUESTION -------

In what area of your life are you wearing the mask of perfection and invincibility? Expose it to the healing light of Jesus’ resurrection.

Jesus, thank You for loving me at my worst. Help me now to o er You my best. Amen!

Today, I pray for: ________________________________________
