SIX STEPS

When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might. – 2 Samuel 6:13-14

I got married on May 6, 2016. Since then, I’d wake up beside my wife and watch her as she sleeps. (Or snores. He, he!) My heart would burst in gratitude to the Lord for blessing me with such a supportive, selfless, and loving woman. Call it cheesy, but I am truly grateful every morning for the amazing gift that my wife is to me.

In the First Reading today, we read about King David and his men entering Jerusalem carrying the ark of the covenant, the visible representation of the presence of God in the Old Testament. They were joyous and grateful for the glorious presence of God among them that they would stop and worship Him in abandon at every sixth step they took. Now, that’s what you call thanking God every step of the way, literally.

Friend, I believe we are constant recipients of God’s mercy and grace, so we have every reason to be grateful always. Let’s not grow tired of praising God. Because gratitude leads to greater grace. Mike Viñas (mikemichaelfcv@yahoo.com)

Reflect: What were your greatest blessings last year?

Father, thank You for all You’ve done, for all You’re doing, and for all You’re going to do in my life. Amen.

COMPANION

1ST READING

We can get overwhelmed by joy about something God has done for us, and desire to praise Him for His goodness. David danced with abandon before the Ark of the Covenant as he brought it into the city. He knew that the hand of God was at work in his life as a successful general of his troops. In today’s reading, David celebrated his victories with the Lord and enjoyed it immensely.

2 Samuel 6:12-15, 17-19

12 David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the City of David amid festivities. 13 As soon as the bearers of the ark of the Lord had advanced six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling. 14 Then David, girt with a linen apron, came dancing before the Lord with abandon, 15 as he and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts of joy and to the sound of the horn. 17 The ark of the Lord was brought in and set in its place within the tent David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 18 When he finished making these offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts. 19 He then distributed among all the people, to each man and each woman in the entire multitude of Israel, a loaf of bread, a cut of roast meat, and a raisin cake. With this, all the people left for their homes.

Psalm 24:7, 8, 9, 10

R: Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!

7 Lift up, O gates, your lintels; reach up, you ancient portals, that the king of glory may come in! (R) 8 Who is this king of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle. (R) 9 Lift up, O gates, your lintels; reach up, you ancient portals, that the king of glory may come in! (R) 10 Who is this king of glory? The Lord of hosts; he is the king of glory. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus teaches us that obedience is the first and foremost characteristic of a disciple. Everything stems from obedience to the Lord’s will. Without obedience and structure, our life becomes chaotic, ruled by every fad and whim of the human heart. Obedience sets us free and safeguards our free will.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.

Mark 3:31-35

31 The mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house. Standing outside they sent word to Jesus and called him. 32 A crowd seated around him told him, “Your mother and your brothers and your sisters are outside asking for you.” 33 But he said to them in reply, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 35 For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

think: Who do you consider as part of your spiritual family? How do they help you in your faith life?

SABBATH

FAMILY FIRST

During Simbang Gabi, I always stress on the importance of the family, saying that the Son of God came to us through the family of Mary and Joseph. As such, our first mission in proclaiming the Gospel is also in our own family. But as we age, like Jesus Christ, we realize this great paradox in our family too: that in order to fully respond to God’s call, we have to leave our family. As Jesus said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother”(Mark 3:34-35, NIV).

For us to fully mature spiritually, we have to leave our family so we can grow in belonging to God who has called us even before we were born. This is why Jesus asked us to forget our families, not really to turn our backs on them, but to leave them so that we may freely respond to God’s call.

Some sociologists claim that two of the big problems that hinder our growth and development as a nation are nepotism and familism. The former is the malpractice among us Filipinos of putting family and relatives in government service so that the resources of the state are often concentrated in one family alone, giving rise to graft and corruption. Nepotism is akin to political dynasty where politicians take all elective posts just to perpetuate influence and power, and wealth of course. Familism is a new concept in sociology, which refers to our cultural inclination to be solely focused on the family that we forget the bigger picture of the society and nation. Familism is extreme love for family that makes us forget others, which eventually hinders growth and development.

Jesus shows us today that family has to be placed in the right perspective — it must always be seen in the larger family of God where we all belong. Fr. Nick Lalog

------- REFLECTION QUESTION -------

Were there instances when your family prevented you from maturing fully as a disciple of the Lord? It is not yet late to respond to Christ’s call to leave your family and follow Him.

Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to call God “our Father,” yet we refuse to leave the confines of our own family and security to be totally free to do His will. Give us the courage to heed the Father’s call. Amen.

Today, I pray for: ______________________________________
