NOT YOUR WAYS

He received all who came to him, and with complete assurance and without hindrance he proclaimed the Kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ. – Acts 28:31

Paul had always known the Lord wanted him to go to Rome to preach.

But sometimes we interpret God’s will for us differently from what He actually has in mind.

Paul must have thought he would go to Rome under pleasant circumstances, “with joy by the will of God and be refreshed together with you” (Romans 15:32). But who would have known that he would indeed reach his destination, not as a preacher but as a prisoner, with hands bound and awaiting trial?

But God’s purpose can’t be thwarted. Yes, Paul came to Rome as a prisoner. That’s how God made it possible for him to get there. But he was also able to fulfill his mission.

In today’s reading, we learn that Paul stayed there for two years in a house where people came to see him. And there he was able to preach about Jesus “without hindrance.”

Is your life unfolding in a way that’s not according to your plan? Don’t worry. Yield to God’s plan. He knows what’s best. His ways are far better than ours. Rissa Singson Kawpeng (rissa@shepherdsvoice.com.ph)

Reflection:“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways—oracle of the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Lord, I trust in Your ways.

COMPANION

1ST READING

The Acts of the Apostles chronicled many of the events of the Early Church. But those recorded are only a small percentage of what actually happened. Let us remember that we have the privilege and responsibility to contribute to the Gospel. This story continues to be played out in our time. Let us trust that we can do great things just as these men and women did in the early years after Jesus.

Acts 28:16-20, 30-31

16 When he entered Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him. 17 Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered he said to them, “My brothers, although I had done nothing against our people or our ancestral customs, I was handed over to the Romans as a prisoner from Jerusalem. 18 After trying my case the Romans wanted to release me because they found nothing against me deserving the death penalty. 19 But when the Jews objected, I was obliged to appeal to Caesar, even though I had no accusation to make against my own nation. 20 This is the reason, then, I have requested to see you and to speak with you, for it is on account of the hope of Israel that I wear these chains.” 30 He remained for two full years in his lodgings. He received all who came to him, 31 and with complete assurance and without hindrance he proclaimed the Kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalm 11:4, 5, 7

R: The just will gaze on your face, O Lord.

4 The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven. His eyes behold, his searching glance is on mankind. (R) 5 The Lord searches the just and the wicked; the lover of violence he hates. 7 For the Lord is just, he loves just deeds; the upright shall see his face. (R)

GOSPEL

Let us pay attention to what God wants to do in and through us. Too often we find fault in what others do rather than live our life — our responsibilities and jobs. If we focus on our call to live the Gospel more fully, it would make a big difference to the Church’s witness.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

I will send to you the Spirit of truth, says the Lord; he will guide you to all truth.

John 21:20-25

20 Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved, the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper and had said, “Master, who is the one who will betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” 22 Jesus said to him, “What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours? You follow me.” 23 So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die. But Jesus had not told him that he would not die, just “What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours?” 24 It is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. 25 There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.

think: If you were to write a book about Jesus’ work in your life, what would be some of the chapter titles?

DISTRACTIONS

One of the most common complaints when someone shares about the difficulty of being consistently committed to their prayer life is the presence of distractions. It is not only when we are talking about prayer that distractions can be a problem. Jesus is reminding Peter that his life’s focus must be what God is asking of him, not what God might be asking John to do. It is natural for us to be concerned about our friends and colleagues, however that should never be to the detriment of what we ourselves ought to be doing.

This is a challenge that we will face all through our lives. It can manifest itself through the idea that the “grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.” It doesn’t matter how green the grass might be in another person’s life. That is their life, and you and I have to live our own lives. Our focus must always be on what God is asking us to do. Only then will we be able to walk the path that leads to true and lasting fulfillment.

We should admire and respect the good deeds and achievements of others, but the moment this turns into adulation and some sort of teenage-like obsession with another person, we have lost our way and will be incapable of hearing, let alone doing, what God wants us to do. If we want to be obsessed about something, it should be about becoming a disciple of Jesus. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

---------- REFLECTION QUESTION ----------

Where do you gain inspiration for your spiritual journey? Have you tapped into the lives of the saints in order to discover models of holiness and discipleship for your life?

Holy Spirit, help me to be inspired by the good things others have done and are doing today so that I will become more faithful to a life of discipleship. Amen.
