MEANINGFUL WORK

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” – John 14:6

My work for the Lord got me involved in various tasks and activities. I work for a company that has ministries for the poor. But my work is predominantly in events and media. In recent years, I fell in love with the art of coaching so I trained in it. Even before I completed the course, I already started coaching people.

I’ve also written my first book and self-published it. I have another one in the pipeline and one more that’s almost finished. I started my online business, and while doing that, I continue to serve the Lord in the music ministry. But even with a very busy schedule, I never forget two important things in my life — to give time to God and my family. They are the primary reasons why I do what I do. By becoming a better me, I help my family by providing for their needs and giving the best for them. The better version of me also blesses the world with my talents and expertise.

We are all pilgrims and our life should lead us to eternity with the Father. With Jesus as our way, everything we accomplish in this world becomes meaningful as they lead us to the Father. Edwin Marcelo (imboodoo@yahoo.com)

Reflection: Let the things you do bring you closer to Jesus.

Be glorified, Lord, in everything that I do. Be my Way so that I only go where it pleases You.

Sts. Nereus and Achilleus, martyrs, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

Forming disciples of Jesus takes a lot of work and a number of years to accomplish. Paul spent months, if not years, forming the major communities in Corinth, Galatia and others. He told the story of Christ’s passion, death and resurrection and did a lot more. It is impossible to preach a sermon, no matter how good it may be, and think the mission is complete.

Acts 13:26-33

26 When Paul came to Antioch in Pisidia, he said in the synagogue: “My brothers, children of the family of Abraham, and those others among you who are God-fearing, to us this word of salvation has been sent. 27 The inhabitants of Jerusalem and their leaders failed to recognize him, and by condemning him they fulfilled the oracles of the prophets that are read sabbath after sabbath. 28 For even though they found no grounds for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him put to death, 29 and when they had accomplished all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and placed him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These are now his witnesses before the people. 32 We ourselves are proclaiming this good news to you that what God promised our fathers 33 he has brought to fulfillment for us, their children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second psalm, You are my Son; this day I have begotten you.”

Psalm 2:6-7, 8-9, 10-11

R: You are my Son; this day I have begotten you.

6 “I myself have set up my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” 7 I will proclaim the decree of the Lord: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; this day I have begotten you.” (R) 8 “Ask of me and I will give you the nations for an inheritance and the ends of the earth for your possession. 9 You shall rule them with an iron rod; you shall shatter them like an earthen dish.” (R) 10 And now, O kings, give heed; take warning, you rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice before him; with trembling rejoice. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus declared that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. This is the basis of our discipleship and it is important for us to accept this truth. Let us decide based on the Gospel and God’s will. Let us remain on the right path and stay connected with God’s Word.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

I am the way and the truth and the life; says the Lord; no one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:1-6

1 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. 2 In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. 4 Where I am going you know the way.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

think: If Jesus is the Way, do you feel that you are on a bumpy dead-end street or a multi-lane highway?

SABBATH

JESUS: THE WAY, THE TRUTH,

AND THE LIFE

For our Gospel today, we begin reading the beautiful “Farewell Discourse” of Jesus (Chapters 14 to 17 of the Gospel according to John). The farewell thoughts and sentiments of Jesus at the Last Supper can help prepare us for the coming Solemnity of the Ascension.

In today’s installment, we have the familiar “Way-Truth-Life” triad of Jesus, defining who He truly is. What is interesting is that this wondrous self-proclamation of our Lord was occasioned by a question from the Apostle Thomas, a question that betrays the latter’s lack of understanding. It’s like Jesus turned a negative occurrence into a chance to disclose a most important revelation about Himself.

He assures us, “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.” Imagine the tallest skyscraper, consisting of low-density floors, and floors of the most exclusive, top-of-the-line luxury condo units, all prepared and fully furnished for each and every one of us. Such is heaven — already pledged for us by Jesus.

And to even complete the most stunning package, our Lord Himself will be our escort, concierge and chauffeur rolled into one. We may be like poor Thomas, mesmerized and overwhelmed, such that he could only blurt out an unwitting question. We, too, confess our feeble ignorance: “Master, we do not know where You are going, how can we know the way?”

We certainly need not worry. Our Lord isn’t going to provide us an intricate map, or a thick guidebook, or a complicated smartphone app for our journey. Not even will He give us confusing verbal directions. He Himself will be the one to fetch us and then accompany us to our heavenly home. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

---------- REFLECTION QUESTION ----------

Have you ever lost your way in the road of life? And in your state of being lost, did you meet Christ, your guide?

Praise be to You, Lord, for Your kindness and mercy. You have done so much for us. In our confusion and false humility, continue to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life for us. Just You, only You. Amen.
