YOU DON’T NEED A
SIGN

The crowd said to Jesus: “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? – John 6:30

Have you ever seen a street sign that says: “Bawal Tumawid. Nakamamatay!” (Do not cross the street, you may die!) There’s even a fence and a big overpass for us to know that it’s dangerous to cross the street. But what do some people do? They still ignore these signs, find creative ways to destroy the fences, and still foolishly cross these streets.

It’s funny that there are times when we ask God for a sign from the biggest to the smallest decisions that we make. A classic example is when we bombard the heavens for signs to point us to our one true love. I’m not saying that God doesn’t give signs. He does! Every single day. But more often that not, we ignore them, especially if it’s not to our favor.

Friends, instead of looking for signs, isn’t it better to just hear God’s voice and have a good conversation with Him? If there’s uncertainty, especially in difficult moments, let God direct you. Talk to Him in prayer and listen to your heart. In your silent moments, let Him speak to you. Monching Bueno (ramon_bueno@yahoo.com)

Reflection:Do you often seek signs from God? Take time today to be at peace with your mind and your heart. Spend some quiet time with the Lord through prayer and let Him speak to your heart.

Father God, forgive us for not trusting You enough. Speak to us every day. Guide us along the way. Amen.

St. Athanasius, bishop and doctor of the Church, pray for us.

1ST READING

Stephen proclaimed the Gospel even though he knew that his life was in danger. The Gospel can penetrate all the areas of society if we make a  stand and offer our life to make God’s message known. We all need to live and proclaim the Gospel no matter how dangerous and difficult it can be.

Acts 7:51-8:1

51 Stephen said to the people, the elders, and the scribes: “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always oppose the Holy Spirit; you are just like your ancestors. 52 Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become. 53 You received the law as transmitted by angels, but you did not observe it.” 54 When they heard this, they were infuriated, and they ground their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 56 and Stephen said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him together. 58 They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them”; and when he said this, he fell asleep. 8:1 Now Saul was consenting to his execution.

Psalm 31:3-4, 6, 7, 8, 17, 21

R: Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.

2 [3] Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to give me safety. 3 [4] You are my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake you will lead and guide me. (R) 5 [6] Into your hands I commend my spirit; you will redeem me, O Lord, O faithful God. 6 [7] My trust is in the Lord. 7 [8] I will rejoice and be glad of your mercy. (R) 16 [17] Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your kindness. 20 [21] You hide them in the shelter of your presence from the plottings of men. (R)

GOSPEL

In today’s Gospel, Jesus referred to the Old Testament manna in the desert and revealed Himself as the Bread of life from heaven. Both “breads” came from the Father but the bread that is Jesus is food for eternal life.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

I am the bread of life, says the Lord; whoever comes to me will never hunger.

John 6:30-35

30 The crowd said to Jesus: “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? 31 Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat. 32 So Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 So they said to Jesus, “Sir, give us this bread always.” 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

think: How do you satify your hunger and thirst for Jesus, the true Bread of Life?

GUARANTEED QUALITY FOOD

Notice how the packaging and marketing of food products nowadays can be very attractive. But sometimes they can also be deceptive. The ancient Romans, in fact, gave the warning which still holds up to now: Caveat emptor (“Let the buyer beware”). Thankfully, some ways of protecting the buyer or consumer have also been invented: guarantees and warranties, repairs and replacements, returns and exchanges.

In today’s Gospel, we read that the food which our Lord offers is food that remains unto life eternal, food which the Son of Man gives, on whom the Father has set His seal. In the words of our analogy, this is real, guaranteed quality food, and certainly not at all the deceitful kind which merely relies on slick packaging and advertising.

Certainly we want to get our money’s worth. Jesus’ audience in the Gospel episode was just as concerned with genuineness and quality. After the Lord told them about such a marvelous food available for them, they asked, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you?” Actually it was Jesus who was the one concerned with genuineness and quality. He unmasked the people’s sincerity by telling them straight, “You are looking for Me not because you saw signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled.”

It all culminated in their imploring Him, “Sir, give us this bread always,” and in Jesus’ presenting Himself, “I am the bread of life ...”

Just as we should be careful and conscious when we buy foodstuff nowadays, so too it should be with life. May we all learn to check and see beyond external trappings. May we not be satisfied with ordinary, plain food — why should we when Christ offers us the bread which comes from heaven and which gives life to the world? Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

---------- REFLECTION QUESTION ----------

Do you sincerely seek to “get your money’s worth” when it comes to the higher or greater things in life, such as the sacrament of the Eucharist?

Let me always seek You, dearest Jesus, over and above the tricks and traps of the world. Teach me to value You always in the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist. Amen.
