TRUE RICHES

“No one can serve two masters...” – Matthew 6:24

There’s a story of a businessman who drove himself hard to become a billionaire. On the way to his goal, he isolated himself from his family and business partners.

On Christmas day, he closed a contract that finally got him that billionaire status. However, he was all by himself and didn’t have anyone to share the news, let alone wish him a merry Christmas. He realized then how empty he felt and how low he had sunk. Jesus’ words ring true when He said, “What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?”

Years ago, after prayer and discernment, I accepted a position that paid less than my job then. But the latter required me to travel frequently and I was feeling the toll on my body and my family. The Lord blessed that decision because my family is now closer than ever. Health-wise, I feel great. I have time to serve in our parish and community. Our material needs are provided for, and then some. God made it clear to me that there is more to life than pursuing a higher paycheck.

Reflection:“There is absolutely nothing that can replace money in the things that money does, but regarding the rest of the things in the world, money is absolutely useless.” (Jim Stovall)

Lord, thank You for making me realize what truly matters in life — the love of family, building lasting relationships, serving You, and knowing that You are enough for me.

St. Maria Bertilla Boscardin, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

This is just a simple image but is effective in explaining a particular truth — that God will never forget us. Even if a mother forgets her child, God will always remember us. He holds us in the palm of His hands.

Isaiah 49:14-15

14 Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” 15 Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.

P S A L M

Psalm 62:2-3, 6-7, 8-9

R: Rest in God alone, my soul.

1 [2] Only in God is my soul at rest; from him comes my salvation. 2 [3] He only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed at all. (R) 5 [6] Only in God be at rest, my soul, for from him comes my hope. 6 [7] He only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed. (R) 7 [8] With God is my safety and my glory, he is the rock of my strength; my refuge is in God. 8 [9] Trust in him at all times, O my people! Pour out your hearts before him. (R)

2ND READING

God knows what is in our hearts and He knows our motivations. Let us purify our reasons for doing good works so that these will become holy and fruitful. Let us keep in mind that the motives for our actions are important. We must be vigilant and act with the best motive – love and obedience to God’s will.

1 Corinthians 4:1-5

1 Brothers and sisters: Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Now it is of course required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. 3 It does not concern me in the least that I be judged by you or any human tribunal; I do not even pass judgment on myself; 4 I am not conscious of anything against me, but I do not thereby stand acquitted; the one who judges me is the Lord. 5 Therefore, do not make any judgment before the appointed time, until the Lord comes, for he will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will manifest the motives of our hearts, and then everyone will receive praise from God.

GOSPEL

Trusting in the providence of God is an essential aspect of discipleship. We must trust Him to provide what we need to do His will. We cannot do it on our own strength. We need faith and humility to receive His grace and to accomplish His will for us.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The word of God is living and effective; discerning reflections and thoughts of the heart.

Matthew 6:24-34

24 Jesus said to his disciples: “No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? 27 Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? 28 Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. 29 But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. 30 If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith? 31 So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’ 32 All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. 34 Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.”

think: What things do you worry about? Surrender your worries to the Lord, our faithful and generous Provider.

SABBATH

MAKERS OF OUR OWN PRISON

Mental health is a big issue today. The incidence of adolescent suicide, work-related depression, anxiety attacks; various cases of neurosis and psychosis; and psychosomatic illnesses are on the rise. There are more concerns about insomnia that make calming and relaxation therapies and drugs in demand. Clinical psychologists are now better appreciated. The increase in alcoholism and substance dependency could be related to people’s need to get away from pressures. Words like “harassed” and “burnout” have become commonplace expressions.

Our age, of course, doesn’t have the monopoly of day-to-day problems. However, mirroring our situations now with the words of Jesus in our Gospel, we note the following:

We have so many masters! We believe in God but we also believe in many other “important” priorities, like pleasing corporate bosses who have practically become the reason for many people’s everyday rising and rushing to work.

We have become too materialistic and too physical. We are no longer contented with generic things. We have learned to dress and dine in style, trying to approximate others’ lifestyles. The brands we use have been the measure of how far we have “made” ourselves.

We have relegated God and spirituality “for emergency cases only.” Transcendence, for many, have been put aside for what is pragmatic. We come to faith when we would like to feel good, or when sickness and failures seem to have exhausted our energies and human capacities.

We have been trained to project too much. Learnings and efficiency have taught many to take things — even the distant future — into their own control and planning. Science and precision has eaten up the space for art and recreation. Imagine, even sports and games meant for relaxation have become scientific and strategized. Fr. Domie Guzman, SSP

---------- REFLECTION QUESTIONS ----------

Are you suffering from anxiety and panic attacks? What is the Lord Jesus telling you now in prayer? What is your unique way of quieting down? Is there someone you know who need to be coached about the art of letting go and relaxing? Make this your personal commitment.

Dear God, remind me always that Your love should rule my life. Help me when I get lost. Amen.
