CHILDREN ARE
AMAZING!

“Let the little children come to me.” – Mark 10:14

My nephew, Zack, was three when he saw the crucifix in our house. He said, “That’s the cross. That’s where Jesus died to save us from our sins.” I was amazed. I couldn’t fathom how he learned this awesome truth.

Raygie, my friend Mariz’s nephew, lived with us when he was four. We taught him to pray when he wakes up, before he sleeps, and before and after meals. One Sunday morning, while we were waiting for a cab to go to The Feast, he prayed aloud, “Lord, please give us a cab so we will not be late for The Feast.” Another time, he prayed, “Lord, please don’t let it rain. We don’t have an umbrella.”

Cosette, my friend Hershey’s three-year-old daughter, would remind her mom every Monday, “Mom, are we going to worship God today at The Feast?”

Children are amazing! Sometimes, we get irritated when they make a lot of noise or when they misbehave. But we miss out a lot when we do not take time to observe and listen to them. So the next chance you get, learn from a child. Meann Tee (meanntytee@yahoo.com)

Reflection:Do you welcome little children as Jesus would? Do you listen to God’s voice speaking through them?

Father, thank You for little children in our midst. They are Your gifts to us. Help us to listen to the wisdom You speak through them. Amen.

Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

Humanity is God’s crowning work of creation. He has created us to share in His life. We are the only ones called to share in the divine life – no other creation has received that call. We have the responsibility to respond to it. How are you living the divine life as a witness to the world of possible intimacy with our Creator?

Sirach 17:1-15

1 God from the earth created man, and in his own image he made him. 2 He makes man return to earth again, 3 and endows man with a strength of his own. Limited days of life he gives him, with power over all things else on earth. 4 He puts the fear of him in all flesh, and gives him rule over beasts and birds. 5 He created for them counsel, and tongues and eyes and ears, and an inventive heart, and filled them with the discipline of an understanding heart. 6 He created in them knowledge of the spirit; with wisdom he fills their heart; good and evil he shows them. 7 He put the fear of himself upon their hearts, and showed them his mighty works, 8 that they might glory in the wonders of his deeds and praise his holy name. 9 He has set before them knowledge, a law of life as their inheritance; 10 an everlasting covenant he has made with them, his justice and his judgments he has revealed to them. 11 His majestic glory their eyes beheld, his glorious voice their ears heard. 12 He says to them, “Avoid all evil”; each of them he gives precepts about his fellow men. 13 Their ways are ever known to him, they cannot be hidden from his eyes. 14 Over every nation he places a ruler, but God’s own portion is Israel. 15 All their actions are clear as the sun to him, his eyes are ever upon their ways.

Psalm 103:13-14, 15-16, 17-18

R: The Lord’s kindness is everlasting to those who fear him.

13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him, 14 for he knows how we are formed; he remembers that we are dust. (R) 15 Man’s days are like those of grass; like a flower of the field he blooms; 16 the wind sweeps over him and he is gone, and his place knows him no more. (R) 17 But the kindness of the Lord is from eternity to eternity toward those who fear him, and his justice toward children’s children 18 among those who keep his covenant. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus emphasizes the role of humility in the Christian life. Humility is the hardest aspect of discipleship to live out. Without humility, it is impossible to live a virtuous life – we will struggle to combat the lies and temptations of the devil on our own strength. Let us humble ourselves and accept the grace that God offers us for our salvation.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.

Mark 10:13-16

13 People were bringing children to Jesus that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” 16 Then he embraced the children and blessed them, placing his hands on them.

think: How have children blessed your life? What do you like about them?

SABBATH

THE MAGIC OF CHILDREN

No, children aren’t behaved. In fact, they can be so mischievous that their hyperactivity may cause damage and breakage to your treasured collection of breakables. They have so much energy and curiosity that they find it hard to keep still and be silent for an extended time. They can be very playful that they forget about certain responsibilities you have entrusted them. Children are not innocent and sinless at all. But they are so lovable that each one of us can bear with what they do, and all of us long to be like them again.

Children have no guile. Whatever they do and whatever they have done — whether good, right, entertaining or wrong — come without ill-intent or malice. Therefore, whatever they do, we find them “cute” and we mostly just smile and laugh at them.

Their fleeting attention and their inclination to be curious with so many things prove how they can easily get over unpleasant experiences and move on from negative feelings such as sadness, frustration, hate, rejection and madness. Hence, they are spared from nurturing hatred and the lingering depressive moods.

The “learning speed and capability” of children are also noteworthy. This is not just brought about by their young mind that can easily absorb and memorize new ways, lessons and values. This is definitely aided by their general disposition to be humble, simply obedient and teachable.

The presence of the children is a gift, one that brings about light-heartedness and cheer. Fr. Domie Guzman, SSP

---------- REFLECTION QUESTIONS ----------

Do you have children at home? How do their agility and quickness challenge you physically or emotionally? How do you experience children as “sunny persons”? Take the time today to especially pray for the children in your immediate family and clan. Reflect on what best blessings they deserve to have.

Lord, thank You for the children in my life. May I be like them in many good ways. Amen.
