A MOTHER’S PRAYER

“Because this widow keeps bothering me, I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.” – Luke 18:5

Forty-eight years ago, my mother prayed for a son. I was born three years after that prayer. I am the firstborn and the only boy in the family.

I grew up as a spoiled brat and became a problem child. I was the headache of my family. During those days, my mother never gave up on me. She never stopped praying. She even offered Masses and sacrifices so I would change, but her prayers didn’t seem to work. I only got worse and my family was on the brink of giving up on me. But my mom didn’t stop praying and attending Masses.

One day, after a long period of time, her prayers were answered. I found myself attending and serving at The Feast.

Now, I am a changed man. I attend Mass and receive Holy Communion every day. I am also a servant leader in two Feasts and I’m a pilgrimage director to places all over the world.

I believe that it was my mother’s persistence in her prayers and sacrifices that made me return to God after living a sinful life. Monty Mendigoria (montymendigoria@yahoo.com)

Reflection:There is someone who can make God say yes even if He already said no. It is the man that prays persistently.

Heavenly Father, teach us to ask and keep on asking until You grant what we ask or our wills conform to Yours.

1ST READING

Moses was a great leader but he needed help to keep his hands up in the air and ensure victory for the Jews over the Amalekites. This teaches us that God can do whatever He wants to do even if He uses means He that are unusual. Who are we to question the ways of God?

Exodus 17:8-13

8 In those days, Amalek came and waged war against Israel. 9 Moses, therefore, said to Joshua, “Pick out certain men, and tomorrow go out and engage Amalek in battle. I will be standing on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” 10 So Joshua did as Moses told him: he engaged Amalek in battle after Moses had climbed to the top of the hill with Aaron and Hur. 11 As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight. 12 Moses’ hands, however, grew tired; so they put a rock in place for him to sit on. Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 And Joshua mowed down Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Psalm 121:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8

R: Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

1 I lift up my eyes toward the mountains; whence shall help come to me? 2 My help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. (R) 3 May he not suffer your foot to slip; may he slumber not who guards you. 4 Indeed he neither slumbers nor sleeps, the guardian of Israel. (R) 5 The Lord is your guardian; the Lord is your shade; he is beside you at your right hand. 6 The sun shall not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. (R) 7 The Lord will guard you from all evil; he will guard your life. 8 The Lord will guard your coming and your going, both now and forever. (R)

2ND READING

God inspired the Scriptures. He uses human instruments to write the Scriptures in the same way He uses us to preach the Gospel. The more attuned we are to the mind of God, the more clearly we will reflect Him. Let us be of one mind and one heart with God and let everything we do be inspired by Him.

2 Timothy 3:14-4:2

14 Beloved: Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it, 15 and that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 4:1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: 2 proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching.

GOSPEL

We must always pray for the grace to persevere in prayer. Without perseverance, the devil will win minor victories through temptation and sin. We must keep on fighting and never give up. In times of temptation and danger, we must rely on the grace and mercy of God to overcome the wiles of the devil and his minions.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The word of God is living and effective, discerning reflections and thoughts of the heart.

Luke 18:1-8

1 Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said, 2 “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being. 3 And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’ 4 For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, 5 because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.’” 6 The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. 7 Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? 8 I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

think:In times of temptation and danger, we must rely on the grace and mercy of God to overcome the wiles of the devil and his minions.

PERSISTENCE, PRAYER, PROCLAMATION

Moses had the drive and the zeal, but he was getting too old for battles meant for younger men like Joshua. Good thing he had more than just the required push — he had a mission, a clear goal. And he had what it takes to achieve them. He had two weapons: persistence and prayer.

Unlike Moses, Timothy was young and inexperienced. His mentor, the legendary Paul, was passing the torch on to him. Paul counseled persistence and patience as his legacy to the young man. They were meant to serve the one activity that Paul became legendary for: proclamation!

As a young seminarian, I was trained by a zealous Italian missionary whose preoccupation was on two of these three Ps: persistence and proclamation. He was a catechist through and through. And he sent us all — young, wide-eyed and energetic but naïve religious — up in the boonies of Calamba, Laguna to proclaim the Word, armed with a Bible in one hand, and a small blackboard or a cassette tape recorder in the other.

At one time, my job was to go every Wednesday to Barrio Mabato, just a stone’s throw away from Tagaytay. My whole-day “mission,” which required an hour’s hike from Buntog, Canlubang, Laguna, was to teach Catechism to students from grade one to fourth year high school.

It was tough. The most difficult part for me was to get and retain the attention of the grade one kids. My patience ran thin and my persistence was running out. My prayer each Wednesday was for the Lord not to send pouring rain as I hiked up and down for a total of two hours each time.

Now that my world has become bigger, and my concerns a lot tougher, the same issues of patience, persistence and the absolute need for prayer continue to crop up — every time, every day. Sometimes, like Moses, I need a rock to prop me up. At times, I need a loyal sidekick like Joshua.

One conviction, though, remains: “Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

REFLECTION QUESTION: We are called to proclaim God’s Word in our own little way. Are you doing so with persistence and prayer?

I need a dose of persistence and prayer in my daily life, Lord. Bless me with both. Amen.
