DAVID AND I

“Who is there like you, God, who removes guilt and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance; who does not persist in anger forever, but delights rather in clemency.” – Micah 7:18

David is one of the biblical characters that I admire the most. So when I was chosen to portray him when the Campus Feast was launched in our university, I was ecstatic! I landed the part because we weren’t able to find a guy who could help us out. Talk about blessings.

After staging the famous David and Goliath scene, many commended me for a job well done. But as I studied what happened in David’s life after that fight, I felt a bit ashamed for playing his part. He committed adultery that led him to plot one person’s death. Seriously?!

Fortunately, God isn’t judgmental like me. He forgave David. Almighty as He is, God is quick to forgive even the most grievous of our sins. He sees beyond our weaknesses and our past. I can’t count the number of times that I’ve sinned, repented, yet failed again. If compassion is not in God’s nature, I can’t imagine what my life would be like today.

I am thankful that our God is a God of love. And His love is unconditional. Maymay R. Salvosa (cmaysalvosa@yahoo.com)

Reflection: Do you turn your back from God because you feel unworthy? God is singing to you right now: “There is nothing you confess that can make Me love you less” (from the song “I’ll Stand by You”).

Father, lead me back to You, stubborn and sinful as I am.

St. Mary MacKillop, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

God is going to preserve a remnant of the people who will become the guardians and carriers of His glory to the next generations. Many of us abandon the call of discipleship because of worldly attachments. Pope Francis identifies worldliness in the Church as one of the greatest dangers we face today. He is reflecting on the fact that many abandon the challenge of discipleship for the pleasures of the world.

Micah 7:14-15, 18-20

14 Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your inheritance, that dwells apart in a wood land, in the midst of Carmel. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old; 15 as in the days when you came from the land of Egypt, show us wonderful signs. 18 Who is there like you, the God who removes guilt and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance; who does not persist in anger forever, but delights rather in clemency, 19 and will again have compassion on us, treading underfoot our guilt? You will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins; 20 you will show faithfulness to Jacob, and grace to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from days of old.

P S A L M

Psalm 85:2-4, 5-6, 7-8

R: Lord, show us your mercy and love.

1 [2] You have favored, O Lord, your land; you have brought back the captives of Jacob. 2 [3] You have forgiven the guilt of your people; you have covered all their sins. 3 [4] You have withdrawn all your wrath; you have revoked your burning anger. (R) 4 [5] Restore us, O God our savior, and abandon your displeasure against us. 5 [6] Will you be ever angry with us, prolonging your anger to all generations? (R) 6 [7] Will you not instead give us life; and shall not your people rejoice in you? 7 [8] Show us, O Lord, your kindness, and grant us your salvation. (R)

GOSPEL

It is our response to the Gospel that Jesus is looking for. Words are meaningless without action. This is why discipleship is important. A disciple hears the Word of God and immediately acts on it. A disciple is nothing if he does not live out the Gospel in its entirety.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him and we will come to him.

Matthew 12:46-50

46 While Jesus was speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers appeared outside, wishing to speak with him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, asking to speak with you.” 48 But he said in reply to the one who told him, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

SABBATH

JESUS’ NEW FAMILY

Living and teaching for almost 25 years in a seminary, I came across many problems of young boys who enter the seminary to become priests. One of these is their close attachment to their families. In a world where family values erode, it is wonderful that in the Philippines, family ties are still close. But for many potential priests and nuns, this can become an obstacle or at least the cause of their major struggles.

It is not just a problem of homesickness though. Many seminarians leave the seminary because they feel they have to support their family financially.

It seems that Jesus was not that attached to His family. The task that  His heavenly Father sent Him to do demanded detachment from His earthly family and total dedication to all those who would become His followers. Followers? No, He speaks of His followers as His “new family” — His brothers, sisters and mother, as we read in today’s Gospel passage.

Where is the father in this family? Of course, there is no father among His followers because the father of Jesus’ new family is God, who is His and our Father. But there is a condition attached to be part of Jesus’ new family. And this condition is that whoever does the will of God is your new family — a family of faith.

Now, since we are all daughters and sons of God the Father, sisters and brothers of Jesus, we have to behave as such. We cannot ignore or hate anyone. Even the poorest, the simplest, the most marginalized among our fellow Christians has to be treated as a beloved sibling.

Families of faith contain three important factors: God, the family itself, and others. When Jesus was asked about the greatest   commandment, He responded that His disciples must love God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love their neighbors as themselves. If we want to cultivate families of faith, we need to learn how to preserve these three important areas of our lives: God, our family, and others. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

REFLECTION QUESTION: Do you consider non-family members as part of your faith family?

Lord, thank You for accepting me as one of Your brothers, for drawing me into Your new family of faith. Help me to widen my horizon and treat everyone as my sisters and brothers. Amen.
