EXCITEMENT

As soon as they were leaving the boat, people immediately recognized him. – Mark 6:54

“They’re here!” Announcing our arrival, the little boy immediately ran inside the campus and shouted again,  “They’re here!”

As we stepped out of our van, the smiles of the little kids greeted us. I could sense an air of expectancy that they would receive something that day.

We went to this rural village for my daughter’s birthday. She wanted to celebrate by feeding a hundred children from poor families, give away school supplies and bags of groceries.

This experience made me reflect on our faith walk.

There are times when we we seem to drag our feet when we go to Mass. When invited to a prayer meeting or a Bible study, we find excuses not to go. Or if ever we say yes, we have no intention of really going.

Know that Jesus is present in the Eucharist. The Lord inhabits the praise and worship of His people. He is present in the prayer meeting. And blessings pour out during these events.

Recognize God’s presence and you will be excited just like the poor children who were expecting to receive. Danny Tariman (dtariman.loj@gmail.com)

Reflection: “Expectancy is the atmosphere for miracles.” (Edwin Louis Cole)

Forgive me, Lord, for taking for granted Your presence in the events of my life. I receive Your love and mercy!

St. Josephine Bakhita, pray for us.

1ST READING

Solomon is building the Temple for the Ark of the Covenant. It is a grand building and takes many years to build. In fact, it is the signature accomplishment during his reign. However, he began to tax the people heavily and conscript laborers for the task. As Nathan and Samuel had prophesied, the people begin to regret their demand for a “king like that of the other nations.”

1 Kings 8:1-7, 9-13

1 The elders of Israel and all the leaders of the tribes, the princes in the ancestral houses of the children of Israel, came to King Solomon in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the Lord’s covenant from the city of David, which is Zion. 2 All the people of Israel assembled before King Solomon during the festival in the month of Ethanim (the seventh month). 3 When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests took up the ark; 4 they carried the ark of the Lord and the meeting tent with all the sacred vessels that were in the tent. (The priests and Levites carried them.) 5 King Solomon and the entire community of Israel present for the occasion sacrificed before the ark sheep and oxen too many to number or count. 6 The priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place beneath the wings of the cherubim in the sanctuary, the holy of holies of the temple. 7 The cherubim had their wings spread out over the place of the ark, sheltering the ark and its poles from above. 9 There was nothing in the ark but the two stone tablets which Moses had put there at Horeb, when the Lord made a covenant with the children of Israel at their departure from the land of Egypt. 10 When the priests left the holy place, the cloud filled the temple of the Lord 11 so that the priests could no longer minister because of the cloud, since the Lord’s glory had filled the temple of the Lord. 12 Then Solomon said, “The Lord intends to dwell in the dark cloud; 13 I have truly built you a princely house, a dwelling where you may abide forever.”

Psalm 132:6-7, 8-10

R: Lord, go up to the place of your rest!

6 “Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of Jaar. 7 Let us enter into his dwelling, let us worship at his footstool.” (R) 8 “Advance, O Lord, to your resting place, you and the ark of your majesty. 9 May your priests be clothed with justice; let your faithful ones shout merrily for joy.” 10 For the sake of David your servant, reject not the plea of your anointed. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus’ ministry has many stories about healing. This shows not just the power of God but also His love for His people and His desire to heal them. It reinforces the message of God’s mercy in the forgiveness of our sins and dispels the image of God as a harsh, judgmental God. Let us open our hearts to receive more of His love and mercy today.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Jesus preached the Gospel of the Kingdom and cured every disease among the people.

Mark 6:53-56

53 After making the crossing to the other side of the sea, Jesus and his disciples came to land at Gennesaret and tied up there. 54 As they were leaving the boat, people immediately recognized him. 55 They scurried about the surrounding country and began to bring in the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 Whatever villages or towns or countryside he entered, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak; and as many as touched it were healed.

think: Let us open our hearts to receive more of God’s love and mercy today.

SABBATH

TASTING AND SEEING GOD’S GLORY

Once upon a time, getting inside a church was a ritual all by itself. One takes off his hat, then dips two or three fingers into a Holy Water fount and dutifully makes the sign of the cross. One reverently genuflects, not a perfunctory shallow bow, toward the altar. The gestures were all signs and an acknowledgment that the glory of the Lord filled the church.

Now that Masses are celebrated in malls and public spaces (dictated, no doubt, by pastoral reasons), one enters a theater, not a temple; a plaza, not a place of worship; an all-purpose gathering area, and not a sacred arena.

Back in the day, clouds of incense and sooty smoke filled holy places. One had that unmistakable feeling that he or she was inside a hallowed place, dedicated solely to God and His glory.

The church, the holy place of worship, belonged to what sociologists refer to as people’s primary world then. Part of the then secondary world would be movie houses, shopping centers, and the occasional carnivals and fiesta fanfare. Now, the exact opposite is true. Malls have become the main fare of young people’s primary world, along with the worldwide web and the world of social media heavily populated by the selfie generation.

Scripture tells us how much God loved us as to make of this world that He created His primary world. John’s Gospel tells us that He has come to dwell in our midst, when Christ, His Son, took on flesh like ours. His Incarnation was the primary sign. His presence is communicated in and through sign, symbol, song and action, both real and palpable, visible and discernible through the senses.

We need to re-appropriate this power to see, touch, feel and know God’s presence, like Solomon and his people did, when they beheld the “cloud that filled the temple of the Lord.”

When was the last time you felt, saw and tasted the sweetness and goodness of the Lord in a quiet church? Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

REFLECTION QUESTION: Starting today, be more aware of God’s presence in the way you participate in the Mass and in the signs all around you, including your fellow Mass-goers.

May I recognize You, Lord, in and out of the church, but more especially in the people You send my way. Amen.
