HIS TRUE PRESENCE

“The coming of the kingdom of God cannot be observed... the kingdom of God is among you.” – Luke 17:20-21

In the early days of my conversion, I was always invited by different religious sects to attend their Bible studies and prayer meetings. They quoted passages in the Bible just to convince me to leave my religion and join theirs.

There were life-changing testimonies from former Catholics who converted when they felt Jesus was more “present” in that specific religious denomination. But every time I asked them about Mary as the Mother of God and the Holy Eucharist as the true presence of Christ, they couldn’t give me concrete answers.

Finally, after so many groups had tried to convince me about their “true” religion, it was God Himself who manifested His presence to me. I attended daily Mass during my lunch breaks and the first of those daily Masses happened on December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. What further proof did I need to show the people on the real presence of God?

From then on, my life changed. To this day, I continue to receive Jesus daily in the Holy Eucharist, where God’s presence is truly magnified. Monty Mendigoria (montymendigoria@yahoo.com)

Reflection: Beware and never let your guards down. There will be voices of deception to make us believe that they were sent to bring salvation. Let Jesus reveal Himself and let Him manifest in your life.

My Lord, let Your almighty power come like a flash of lightning and let the world see Your greatness in every corner of the Earth.

St. Josaphat, bishop and martyr, pray for us.

1ST READING

A truly wise person knows his limits. Fortunately for us, God is infinitely wise and has no limits. We can be 100 percent sure that He is there for us no matter what our situation may be. God always seeks us out in spite of our sinfulness and busyness. He never gives up on us and we should not take advantage of His goodness. We should also seek Him and when He has found us, let us rejoice in His nearness and allow Him to show us the right path.

Wisdom 7:22–8:1

22 In Wisdom is a spirit intelligent, holy, unique, manifold, subtle, agile, clear, unstained, certain, not baneful, loving the good, keen, unhampered, beneficent, 23 kindly, firm, secure, tranquil, all-powerful, all-seeing, and pervading all spirits, though they be intelligent, pure and very subtle. 24 For Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion, and she penetrates and pervades all things by reason of her purity. 25 For she is an aura of the might of God and a pure effusion of the glory of the Almighty; therefore nought that is sullied enters into her. 26 For she is the refulgence of eternal light, the spotless mirror of the power of God, the image of his goodness. 27 And she, who is one, can do all things, and renews everything while herself perduring; and passing into holy souls from age to age, she produces friends of God and prophets. 28 For there is nought God loves, be it not one who dwells with Wisdom. 29 For she is fairer than the sun and surpasses every constellation of the stars. Compared to light, she takes precedence; 30 for that, indeed, night supplants, but wickedness prevails not over Wisdom. 8:1 Indeed, she reaches from end to end mightily and governs all things well.

Psalm 119:89, 90, 91, 130, 135, 175

R: Your word is for ever, O Lord.

89Your word, O Lord, endures forever; it is firm as the heavens. 90Through all generations your truth endures; you have established the earth, and it stands firm. (R) 91According to your ordinances they still stand firm: all things serve you. (R) 130 The revelation of your words sheds light, giving understanding to the simple. (R) 135Let your countenance shine upon your servant, and teach me your statutes. (R) 175Let my soul live to praise you, and may your ordinances help me. (R)

GOSPEL

It is not always easy to proclaim the Gospel in the secular world. It can be downright hard and discouraging. Many times we will be ridiculed for our beliefs. However, we should not give up on the Gospel. We have experienced it as the most life-giving reality. Let us share this source of eternal life with everyone.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

I am the vine, you are the branches, says the Lord: whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit.

Luke 17:20-25

20 Asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come, Jesus said in reply, “The coming of the Kingdom of God cannot be observed, 21 and no one will announce, ‘Look, here it is,’ or, ‘There it is.’ For behold, the Kingdom of God is among you.” 22 Then he said to his disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. 23 There will be those who will say to you, ‘Look, there he is,’ or ‘Look, here he is.’ Do not go off, do not run in pursuit. 24 For just as lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day. 25 But first he must suffer greatly and be rejected by this generation.”

think: Proclaiming the Gospel is the most life-giving reality. Let us share this source of eternal life with everyone.

SABBATH

THE WAY OF THE KINGDOM

The proclamation of the Kingdom of God and its action in human history was the central teaching of Jesus’ ministry. At His very first public appearance, Jesus declared, “Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand” (Matthew 3:2; Mark 1:15). People began expecting for the coming of that kingdom. They thought of it as a political kingdom, ruled by a political Messiah, who would liberate Israel from Roman occupation.

When they did not see and hear signs of that kingdom happening and coming to fruition, they became impatient and demanded from Jesus where and when they will see the fulfillment of that kingdom. But Jesus was talking about a different kind of kingdom — a Kingdom where God’s will and His precepts take first place in the hearts of men, a Kingdom that roots out the stronghold of sin in the heart and transforms men and women to become salt and light of the world, renewing the face of the earth. Like that of a seed, it grows imperceptibly in silence. That is why Jesus says the growth of the kingdom is “not something that can be observed nor a matter of pointing ‘it is here’ or ‘it is there’” (see verses 20-21).

Today, with evil happening all around us, it’s very easy to be discouraged and cynical. Is the Kingdom of God really present in the world? Is God really involved in history or has He abandoned it?

When a tree falls, everybody notices it, for it makes a loud noise. But hardly anyone pays attention to the countless trees in the same forest that grow, bear fruit and give life constantly, regularly, imperceptibly — in silence. Let us not be fooled and seduced by the noise that one falling tree creates, overshadowing the many others who continue to flourish in silence.

Good news never make the headlines, they say, because they don’t sell newspapers. Make no mistake about it, the Kingdom of God and its action is among us, accomplishing its purpose, in its own proper time, in its own gracious way. Fr. Joel Jason

REFLECTION QUESTION: Are you paying attention to the many imperceptible ways God is reaching out to you?

May I be ever attentive to You, O God, and the manifold ways You will reach out to me today. Amen.
