TO-DO LIST

“Yet I consider life of no importance to me, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to bear witness to the gospel of God.”– Acts 20:24

As I write this reflection, I’m also thinking about the long list of things I need to accomplish for work and my family. I tick off items on my to-do list but more tasks get added by the minute. I admit I get tired and sometimes feel bad about not having as much time to do things for myself. But I continue to work, keeping my eyes on the finish line, knowing I must persevere for the sake of the students I teach and the family I love.

Paul did the same. He had a job to do, and he persevered until the end. He gave his life for the sake of the Gospel in spite of the inconveniences and dangers, preaching far and wide so that others may come to know Jesus. It was the first and only item on his to-do list after his life-changing encounter with God.

If we can find it in ourselves to work extra hard to build successful careers and lucrative businesses, I’d bet that, like Paul, we too could put in extra time, effort and creativity into being witnesses for the Gospel every day — in our country, community, work places and homes. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to say that we have run the good race and fought the good fight? Geraldine G. Catral (catral@beaconschool.ph)

Reflection: What is number one on your to-do list today? Is God in it?

Father, Son and Holy Spirit, grant me the boldness and perseverance to proclaim Your Gospel today and every day of my life. Amen.

St. Theophilus of Corte, pray for us.

1ST READING

Paul’s ministry is of good faith and he has not forced himself upon any of his listeners. The individual must accept the Gospel if it is to mean anything for him. For example, it is a parent’s prerogative to baptize his or her child, but the effect of the sacrament will come only when the child is old enough to personally appropriate the grace of baptism.

Acts 20:17-27

17 From Miletus Paul had the presbyters of the church at Ephesus summoned. 18 When they came to him, he addressed them, “You know how I lived among you the whole time from the day I first came to the province of Asia. 19 I served the Lord with all humility and with the tears and trials that came to me because of the plots of the Jews, 20 and I did not at all shrink from telling you what was for your benefit, or from teaching you in public or in your homes. 21 I earnestly bore witness for both Jews and Greeks to repentance before God and to faith in our Lord Jesus. 22 But now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem. What will happen to me there I do not know, 23 except that in one city after another the Holy Spirit has been warning me that imprisonment and hardships await me. 24 Yet I consider life of no importance to me, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to bear witness to the Gospel of God’s grace. 25 “But now I know that none of you to whom I preached the kingdom during my travels will ever see my face again. 26 And so I solemnly declare to you this day that I am not responsible for the blood of any of you, 27 for I did not shrink from proclaiming to you the entire plan of God.”

Psalm 68:10-11, 20-21

R: Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.

9 [10] A bountiful rain you showered down, O God, upon your inheritance; you restored the land when it languished; 10 [11] Your flock settled in it; in your goodness, O God, you provided it for the needy. (R) 19 [20] Blessed day by day be the Lord, who bears our burdens; God, who is our salvation. 20 [21] God is a saving God for us; the Lord, my Lord, controls the passageways of death. (R)

GOSPEL

You can hear the satisfaction in Jesus’ words as He announces that He has accomplished all that His Father has asked Him to do. His passion will soon be in the hands of others as the work of salvation comes to its completion. Jesus prays for His disciples for strength and grace to persevere in their call. He prays for them and sends them the Holy Spirit as He reunites with His Father.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always.

John 17:1-11

1 Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, 2 just as you gave him authority over all people, so that your son may give eternal life to all you gave him. 3 Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. 4 I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do. 5 Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began. 6 “I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, 8 because the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, 10 and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them. 11 And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.”

SABBATH

KNOWING THE FATHER

As we move in this week of prayer for Christian unity, the Church has given us the whole 17th chapter of John. We are to reflect on the words of Jesus to His disciples in the Upper Room, the night before His death. We notice that Jesus will first pray for Himself, then for His disciples, and lastly for those who will listen to the words of the disciples sent by Jesus.

Up until this time, Jesus said that the hour has “not yet arrived.” Now the hour has arrived. Jesus’ death is, according to John, the hour of glorification with the Father. He reveals the depth of His intimacy to the Father. Praying in the presence of His disciples, He asks the Father to glorify Him with the glory that was there in the beginning. Jesus is now satisfied because His mission is complete — He made the Father known. Now that He is returning to the Father, He makes known to the Father His desire that they continue to be cared for by the Father. The prayer is beautifully intimate, revealing to us the depth of knowledge between the Father and the Son. And Jesus brings us into that kind of relationship — an intimate knowledge of the Father. The intimate knowledge of the Father and the Son is a gift given to us through the power of the Holy Spirit. During this week leading to Pentecost, let us continue to call out to the Spirit who reveals to us Jesus and the Father.

All of us seek intimacy in our lives and this can be found on various levels. Most often, intimacy is associated with sexual activity, but it is actually a need at the emotional, intellectual and spiritual levels, as well as on the physical level. We are meant for each other. The Christian journey is not an isolated one.We belong to the Church, the Body of Christ. This week of prayer for Christian unity should stress that fact. We are the Church on the move. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

REFLECTION QUESTION: How can you develop an intimate relationship with Jesus as Lord and Savior?

Thank You, Lord, for coming and revealing to us the knowledge of the Father. Amen.
