IN JESUS’ NAME

“…whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.” – John 16:23

Truly, there is power in the mighty name of Jesus! But you have to use it in the right way.

People come to me and ask why their prayers continue to be unanswered when they ask “in Jesus’ name.”

There are reasons to that. Maybe He wants you to wait and grow in patience and faith. Maybe He’s preparing a better and bigger surprise for you. Maybe the answer is already there but you fail to see it.

Or maybe it’s the wrong prayer and using the name of Jesus may even be in vain. I know of people who pray that they will not be caught cheating during an exam, or that the Lord would bless an extramarital affair, or that their enemies meet an accident and die. And yes, they pray this “in Jesus’ name.”

I know God works in mysterious ways and He loves sinners. But I doubt very much if these kinds of prayers are what Jesus meant by “whatever you ask… in my name, it will be granted.”

Let’s give the highest respect to the name of Jesus and use His name with reverence. In Jesus’ name! Alvin Barcelona (apb_ayo@yahoo.com)

Reflection: Are you praying for good things? By all means pray in Jesus’ name. But are these good things for you and for others?

Dear Jesus, I believe in the power of Your name. Grant me the grace to use it only for Your glory and for the genuine love of others. Amen.

St. Margaret of Cortona, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

There are many who faithfully proclaim the Gospel. We do not compete with one another. Instead, we should work together to proclaim the Gospel and be united against the sins of the world. Christians should support one another and know that the truth sets us all free.

Acts 18:23-28

23 After staying in Antioch some time, Paul left and traveled in orderly sequence through the Galatian country and Phrygia, bringing strength to all the disciples. 24 A Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, an eloquent speaker, arrived in Ephesus. He was an authority on the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord and, with ardent spirit, spoke and taught accurately about Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the Way of God more accurately. 27 And when he wanted to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. After his arrival he gave great assistance to those who had come to believe through grace. 28 He vigorously refuted the Jews in public, establishing from the Scriptures that the Christ is Jesus.

Psalm 47:2-3, 8-9, 10

R: God is king of all the earth.

1 [2] All you peoples, clap your hands, shout to God with cries of gladness. 2 [3] For the Lord, the Most High, the awesome, is the great king over all the earth. (R) 7 [8] For king of all the earth is God; sing hymns of praise. 8 [9] God reigns over the nations, God sits upon his holy throne. (R) 9 [10] The princes of the peoples are gathered together with the people of the God of Abraham. For God’s are the guardians of the earth; he is supreme. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus told His disciples that His earthly pilgrimage is ending and that He will return to the Father in Heaven. The disciples must have been disappointed. Jesus reminded them that the Father will send the Holy Spirit to them. There comes a time when we have to make decisions for ourselves and for our faith.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

I came from the Father and have come into the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.

John 16:23-28

23 Jesus said to his disciples: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. 24 Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. 25 “I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. 26 On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. 27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”

think: Let us work together to proclaim the Gospel and be united against the sins of the world.

SABBATH

GOD IS OVERWHELMED

Deep within us, there is a pining for love and acceptance; to be loved and to love. When that is threatened, we look for ways to compensate the love and so we turn to sin, obsessions and addictions — and life becomes messy. It is only God who can bring rest to the restless, as in St. Augustine’s oft-quoted prayer: “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

Jesus knows how our hearts yearn for love. He is love par excellence and manifests this in His own life and ministry. In the Upper Room, in His last supper with them, He painstakingly reminds the disciples to trust and hope in God, who alone is love. The ultimate expression of this love is His death on the cross. He is teaching them to pray and ask the Lord for assistance for the journey ahead of them. Jesus continues to remind them of the Father’s love.

The Father Himself loves you! When you really think about this statement, this is truly overwhelming and mind-blowing! God the Creator, who made the heavens and the earth and everything therein, loves you as a Father. Understandably, for some of us, we cannot get our mind around a loving Father — that is not our experience. Notwithstanding this dilemma (if that is your experience), we call upon the grace of the Lord to penetrate our minds and hearts with this awesome truth. Jesus knows and sees our instability and restlessness at times. He sees our lack of faith, but it does not stop the Father from loving us, since we believe that Jesus has come from God. This is an awe-inspiring thought for God. Whatever pain and emptiness we experience in life, we can still believe in God who loves and is present in our suffering. This overwhelms the mind of God — that humanity still dares to believe in Him despite all odds. Think about it! Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

REFLECTION: Ask and you will receive. Dare to call Him “Father” and see how the Father will act in your life.

Give me life and love, O Lord. Amen.
