OUR BEST INTEREST

When they came to Mysia, they tried to go on into Bithynia but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. – Acts 16:7

The woman came to our office in a rush, saying she really needed to travel the next day. I gave her a quote and she said to book the flight right away. When she mentioned she will need to go to the nearest ATM to get the rest of her money, there was a pause inside me. I didn’t mind that pause and proceeded with the booking. That day, we lost money when the woman didn’t come back.

Many times, I have found that the Holy Spirit speaks through the still small voice deep within us. He is very easy to ignore, so it’s up to me to acknowledge that Voice of Wisdom and then to obey it.

The Holy Spirit is also known as the Paraclete, meaning “advocate” and “counselor.” He has our best interest at heart. Let us strive to hear His voice more clearly and obey Him. Joy Sosoban-Roa (jsosoban@gmail.com)

Reflection: Have you made a place for the Holy Spirit in your life? Do you want to grow closer to Him?

Dearest Holy Spirit, my Paraclete, enable me to know You and draw closer to You.

St. Catherine of Bologna, pray for us.

1ST READING

Paul preached in many places and took every opportunity to share the Good News. Sometimes I hesitate to stand up and proclaim my faith in God. Paul never hesitated because he surrendered himself to the grace of the Holy Spirit. Let us ask the Spirit to empower us to share our faith with others.

Acts 16:1-10

1 Paul reached also Derbe and Lystra where there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. 2 The brothers in Lystra and Iconium spoke highly of him, 3 and Paul wanted him to come along with him. On account of the Jews of that region, Paul had him circumcised, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. 4 As they traveled from city to city, they handed on to the people for observance the decisions reached by the Apostles and presbyters in Jerusalem. 5 Day after day the churches grew stronger in faith and increased in number. 6 They traveled through the Phrygian and Galatian territory because they had been prevented by the Holy Spirit from preaching the message in the province of Asia. 7 When they came to Mysia, they tried to go on into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them, 8 so they crossed through Mysia and came down to Troas. 9 During the night Paul had a vision. A Macedonian stood before him and implored him with these words, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 When he had seen the vision, we sought passage to Macedonia at once, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the Good News to them.

Psalm 100:1-2, 3, 5

R: Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

1 Sing joyfully to the Lord, all you lands; 2 serve the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful song. (R) 3 Know that the Lord is God; he made us, his we are; his people, the flock he tends. (R) 5 The Lord is good, his kindness endures forever, and his faithfulness, to all generations. (R)

GOSPEL

The world rejected Jesus and the Gospel He proclaimed. Just look at the cross. The Gospel has many aspects that appeal to the world. However, the call to discipleship and taking up the cross is hardly welcomed. To pay the price of discipleship is the key to enjoy its full benefits. Salvation is offered to all who are called. Blessed are they who respond to this call — theirs is the gift of everlasting life

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

John 15:18-21

18 Jesus said to his disciples: “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you. 20  Remember the word I spoke to you, ‘No slave is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.”

think: Salvation is offered to all who are called.

SABBATH

WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING?

One of the constant challenges I find in my ministry is dealing with the issue of homesickness. No matter how long you may have lived overseas, there will always be a pull at the heartstrings, calling you home. Home is that familiar place where places and faces are impressed on our minds and hearts. The missionary in another country, the parent working abroad, the news reporter traveling the world — they all experience this homesickness. Homesickness makes us feel that we do not belong anywhere else. We try so hard to adjust, but there is no place like home.

The Scriptures remind us that we are pilgrims on this earth; that this place is not our real home. Our true homeland is in heaven where all the saints, angels and the loved ones await our return. We are earthbound but focused on heaven. Eternity must be our focus. There is no lasting place here on earth. Jesus tells us in the Gospel that we live in the world but are not of the world — we are meant for something more!

Jesus tried to emphasize that we are made for heaven. Similarly, you will notice that any item of clothing will always have its trademark made in a certain country. We are made in God. Our God has given us life on earth for a time. However, there will come a time when He will call us back to Him forever. We need to start living in this truth. With heaven as our goal, Jesus has chosen us for Himself and we are to be where He is.

Let us make the most of this world. Let us live lives of service and love. Let us reach out to others, encouraging and assisting them in recognizing the truth that life does not end here. The resurrection of Jesus reminds us of this truth this season of Easter. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: How do you live your life? Do you have an eternal perspective for your life?

Lord, You have made us for Yourself. We belong to You. Make us realize how short our life is and live it accordingly.
