GENEROSITY GOES A
LONG WAY

“I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest.” – Luke 21:3

There was a missionary in Hong Kong named John Bechtel who wanted to start a Christian camp for evangelization.

A bankrupt, multimillion-dollar hotel became available for sale so he made an offer to buy the property. He then went around the world to raise the money he would need.

Unfortunately, no one was willing to help and he returned to Hong Kong hopeless. Then one day, he got a letter from a young girl that included $1 and a note saying she wanted him to use this to purchase the camp. He prayed and took the girl’s $1 to the real estate closing and the company decided to accept the $1 as full payment! Since the camp first opened, over a million people have been blessed by their experience during their stay.

In today’s Gospel, we are challenged to give not from our surplus. Just like the message of the poor widow and the young girl, it’s not about the amount you give but the love you put into it that matters. JC Libiran (jclibiran@ymail.com)

Reflection: “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” (Winston Churchill)

Jesus, make my life a testimony of Your generosity.

1ST READING

How many people will be saved? It depends on the loving mercy of God. It is God’s love and mercy that will have the final say on whether or not we will be saved. So let us prepare ourselves as well as we can for our own judgment so that we will not fear it.

Revelation 14:1-3, 4-5

1 I, John, looked and there was the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2 I heard a sound from heaven like the sound of rushing water or a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. 3 They were singing what seemed to be a new hymn before the throne, before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn this hymn except the hundred and forty-four thousand who had been ransomed from the earth. 4 These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been ransomed as the firstfruits of the human race for God and the Lamb. 5 On their lips no deceit has been found; they are unblemished.

Psalm 24:1-2, 3-4, 5-6

R: Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.

1 The Lord’s are the earth and its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it. 2 For he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. (R) 3 Who can ascend the mountain of the Lord? Or who may stand in his holy place? 4 He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean, who desires not what is vain. (R) 5 He shall receive a blessing from the Lord, a reward from God his savior. 6 Such is the race that seeks for him, that seeks the face of the God of Jacob. (R)

GOSPEL

What does it mean to be generous? It is relative to our individual circumstances. It is not determined by the size of our donation but more by our capacity to give. Money does not have to be involved — we can give our time and talents just as well. In fact, they are probably more important in the long run as relationships are the key to building God’s Kingdom, not buildings and money.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Stay awake! For you do not know when the Son of Man will come.

Luke 21:1-4

1 When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people putting their offerings into the treasury 2 and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins. 3 He said, “I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; 4 for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”

think:  Let us prepare ourselves as well as we can for our own judgment so we will not fear it.

SABBATH

A PEOPLE THAT LONGS TO SEE GOD’S FACE

Back in the day, people formed fans’ clubs and would organize annual conventions to extol the virtues of their favorite movie star. Nowadays, they form cyber groups, like Facebook fan pages that are no longer for movie stars, but simply showbiz or public personalities. Behind such groups is basically a longing to be identified with the celebrity in question, a desire to belong to his or her company, and definitely a wish to always be within the shadow of whoever it is they adulate.

It almost sounds like we have a similar fans’ club in the First Reading — a horde of 144,000 (read: countless!) — who, it is said, “follow the Lamb wherever He goes.” This crowd, however, did not sign up, sign in or log on to a dedicated website. They do not belong to an exclusive, private and secret group, who were conscripted against their will, just to belong to some kind of mutual admiration club.

While the fan clubs we now know have to do with people who might be really focused on their need to belong and to be identified with a celebrity, those who “follow the Lamb wherever He goes” became followers not because they desired to belong, but on account of the fact that they “were washed by the blood of the Lamb.” They were redeemed, saved, “ransomed as the firstfruits of the human race for God and the Lamb.”

You and I, by God’s singular grace and gift, can hope to be counted among the innumerable throngs mentioned above. We did not choose God — no, He chose us and saved us, and considered us His very own.

Our task remains to keep this “holy longing” for God and His promises alive in our hearts. It is easy to lose sight of the goal. We can fall along the way, as we have done repeatedly, and be waylaid by other desires that have nothing to do with God.

“Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.” We are filled with that “holy longing” to one day be counted among them. Never allow us to exchange You for the lesser gods the world offers! Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

REFLECTION QUESTION: How do you keep your “holy longing” for God alive in your heart?

Enkindle in me the fire of Your love, Lord.
