KABABAYAN

“But as to what is within, give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.” – Luke 11:41

He calls me kababayan. Almost daily, this shabbily dressed Pinoy comes into our store in San Diego, California to buy a cup of coffee with the very little money that he carries in his pocket. Yet he often leaves loose change in my coin tray for other customers to use when they lack a penny or two.

I learned recently that he lives in a home for adults with drug problems and psychological conditions. I once encountered him when he wasn’t “all there.” Though he looked scary on the outside, I knew that the person I had made friends with was in there. So when he came to me to say he wanted some coffee but didn’t have money anymore, I offered to pay for it. He deserved the treat.

Every day I encounter people dressed in decent clothes and driving fancy cars, but a good number of them are rude — not like my troubled kababayan who’s untidy on the outside, but is friendly and generous on the inside. He must be sparkling like a diamond in God’s eyes. Nova Arias-Sevilla (nova.svp@gmail.com)

Reflection: More than your genius and your appearance, God looks within you. What does He see inside?

Heavenly Father, purify my heart. Cleanse me from the inside out.

St. Callistus I, pope and martyr, pray for us.

1ST READING

Paul makes it clear that the opposite to a life of faith in Christ and the Gospel is a life of slavery to sin and its powers. As harsh as this may sound, it is true. Faith can deepen and strengthen over time according to individual responses; however, it remains a binary state — we either live by it or not.

Galatians 5:1-6

1 Brothers and sisters: For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. 2 It is I, Paul, who am telling you that if you have yourselves circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 Once again I declare to every man who has himself circumcised that he is bound to observe the entire law. 4 You are separated from Christ, you who are trying to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. 5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we await the hope of righteousness. 6 For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

Psalm 119:41, 43, 44, 45, 47, 48

R: Let your mercy come to me, O Lord.

41 Let your mercy come to me, O Lord, your salvation according to your promise. (R) 43 Take not the word of truth from my mouth, for in your ordinances is my hope. (R) 44 And I will keep your law continually, forever and ever. (R) 45 And I will walk at liberty, because I seek your precepts. (R) 47 And I will delight in your commands, which I love. (R) 48 And I will lift up my hands to your commands and meditate on your statutes. (R)

GOSPEL

It is relatively easy to make our life look good from the outside. The real truth of the matter rests on what is going on within. It is in our hearts and minds that sin originates. Jesus demonstrates an extreme dislike of hypocrisy during His ministry and, thus, we should avoid it in our own response to the Gospel. Let us never be afraid to address the sources of sin in our lives so that we can root it out completely.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The word of God is living and effective, able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.

Luke 11:37-41

37 After Jesus had spoken, a Pharisee invited him to dine at his home. He entered and reclined at table to eat. 38 The Pharisee was amazed to see that he did not observe the prescribed washing before the meal. 39 The Lord said to him, “Oh you Pharisees! Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, inside you are filled with plunder and evil. 40 You fools! Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside? 41 But as to what is within, give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.”

think:  It is in our hearts and minds that sin originates.

SABBATH

FAITH WORKING THROUGH LOVE

Yesterday, our reflection was about tuning out the non-essentials and focusing on the one important sign — our belief in Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.

Let’s face it, we are barraged on all fronts with so many stimuli. We face a daily information overload. We are connected 24/7. We are wired to an endless glut of data. Even our cell phones are clogged with ads informing us of the latest gadget, the best deal, the newest condo units available, etc. Twitter constantly tweets the latest about the people we are following or the people following us.

In the United States, one funny phenomenon I saw everywhere in my stay there is their use of the garage. They are filled, not with cars (that sit out at the mercy of sun, sleet or snow) but with oodles of toilet paper, paper towels, and an endless variety of knick-knacks bought on sale at wholesale clubs. More often than not, those items eventually end up in garage sales.

Like the Pharisees, we too are taken up by the non-essentials, by empty rituals (like the obligatory mall sale, the growing fad of the obligatory “fun run,” and the annual ritual of holding on to the rope that connects one to the Black Nazarene, etc.). Please don’t get me wrong. I am not saying any of them is bad in and of itself.

But they do tell us how thinly spread we are on account of the 1,001 things we need to attend to. The Pharisees did precisely that. They reveled in the minute details of the Law and forgot about its spirit. They focused on the external trappings and missed on the internal, mostly unseen, reality.

Today, we are reminded about this greater but invisible reality of our faith, which goes beyond mere external observance. It is not just a matter of having one’s self circumcised and then missing out on “observing the entire law.” Keeping cups and dishes clean on the outside is good, but nothing quite takes the place of “faith working through love.” Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

REFLECTION QUESTION: Are you more concerned about performing the rituals of your faith than in fulfilling the spirit behind them?

Lord, grant me the grace to express my faith through acts of love for my neighbor.
