A SIMPLE GESTURE

“If only I touch His cloak, I will get well.” – Matthew 9:21

Just like in today’s reading, we only need to see a glimpse of Christ to be healed. It can be as simple as an encouragement from a friend. A simple invitation to a prayer meeting. A fellowship at The Feast. Unwavering love from a mother. A book for a gift.

My journey towards getting to know God on a personal level started when a close friend gifted me with a book of Bo Sanchez. Since I first got hold of his book, my collection of Bo Sanchez’s books grew in number until I was introduced to The Kerygma Feast. I was starstruck when I first saw the man who spoke to me through his writings.

Just like other women my age, I got over my crush on Bo. I tried to actively seek my one true love (OTL) after reading two of his books on the topic. After spending the first seven years of my journey in serving the Lord and healing my past hurts, I did find my OTL. We both invited God to be at the center of our relationship.

It’s amazing how great things start with a simple gesture. Ems Sy Chan (havenofleeanne@yahoo.com)

Reflection: Who introduced you to the true face of God? Have you thanked that person?

May I always see Your face in the simplest of things — and my soul shall be healed.

Blessed Emmanuel Ruiz and Companions, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

Hosea’s prophecy comes from a rare source of the Old Testament, one that views the relationship between God and His people as a marriage. This is a beautiful image as it opens the way to an understanding of God’s love far more freely and easily than, say, the image of discipline. When we read through Hosea, let us be mindful of the many images of love that he uses to explain the relationship between God and His people.

Hosea 2:16, 17-18, 21-22

16 Thus says the Lord: I will allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak to her heart. 17 She shall respond there as in the days of her youth, when she came up from the land of Egypt. 18 On that day, says the Lord, she shall call me “My husband,” and never again “My baal.” 21 I will espouse you to me forever: I will espouse you in right and in justice, in love and in mercy; 22 I will espouse you in fidelity, and you shall know the Lord.

Psalm 145:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9

R: The Lord is gracious and merciful.

2 Every day will I bless you, and I will praise your name forever and ever. 3 Great is the Lord and highly to be praised; his greatness is unsearchable. (R) 4 Generation after generation praises your works and proclaims your might. 5 They speak of the splendor of your glorious majesty and tell of your wondrous works. (R) 6 They discourse of the power of your terrible deeds and declare your greatness. 7 They publish the fame of your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your justice. (R) 8 The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The Lord is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus makes it quite clear that it is the woman’s faith that has healed her. Nothing is said of her works or way of life. Yet, if a person has faith of that depth, it is virtually impossible to think of them living a totally dissolute life. Faith impels a person to act in a manner consistent with his expressed beliefs. If we believe in a God of love, then we will act accordingly. Let us ensure that this is the case in our own lives.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life to light through the Gospel.

Matthew 9:18-26

18 While Jesus was speaking, an official came forward, knelt down before him, and said, “My daughter has just died. But come, lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 Jesus rose and followed him, and so did his disciples. 20 A woman suffering hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the tassel on his cloak. 21 She said to herself, “If only I can touch his cloak, I shall be cured.” 22 Jesus turned around and saw her, and said, “Courage, daughter! Your faith has saved you.” And from that hour the woman was cured. 23 When Jesus arrived at the official’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd who were making a commotion, 24 he said, “Go away! The girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they ridiculed him. 25 When the crowd was put out, he came and took her by the hand, and the little girl arose. 26 And news of this spread throughout all that land.

think:  Faith impels a person to act in a manner consistent with his expressed beliefs.

SABBATH

OUR FEEBLE EFFORTS AND GOD’S

GENTLE PRODDING

The prophet Hosea in today’s First Reading opens with a statement from the Lord: “I will allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak to her heart.” “Her” refers to the Israelite nation and the desert is the biblical image of a sacred place, a location where human beings come close to the living God. In fact, the desert becomes a place of espousal, where God woos Israel in very dear and heartfelt ways, as do lovers: “I will espouse you to me forever...” Note that the phrase “I will espouse you” occurs three times in the short passage.

In the Gospel, on the other hand, the person of Jesus is the sacred “place” where a synagogue leader and an ailing woman come into loving contact with the living God. Interestingly, there is a movement in two directions. The synagogue leader wants Jesus to touch his daughter — to lay his hand on her, to be exact. The ailing woman instead wants to touch Jesus or at least His cloak.

On one side, there is God’s loving desire, potent and determined. On the other are our own human efforts, feeble yet earnest. When these two intersect, the result is marvelous.

We just have to allow ourselves to be allured by God’s love. If need be, we just have to be led by Him, even to the desert areas of our lives with all the heat and dryness. The shaky steps we take in our quest for Him are, in a sense, more than enough. He will take care of pitching in for our tentativeness and our shortcomings by means of His gentle prodding. As long as we do our best, God will do the rest. As our Responsorial Psalm puts it, “The Lord is gracious and merciful.” Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

REFLECTION QUESTION: What small and big steps are you taking in your spiritual life?

Thank You, Lord God, for understanding my feeble efforts in reaching out to You. Please hold my hand and never let me go.
