CONFIDENCE IN PRAYER

We have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. — 1 John 5:14

As I write this reflection, my family is waking up to a brand new day in a brand new house. We just moved in yesterday to the home we had been praying for.
For many years, we had been asking God for a house of our own. Three years ago, the Lord blessed us with a 300-square-meter lot. We had dreamt of a big house built on it. We had imagined how it would look as we visited many interior design galleries.
But God had the best plan. Early last year, someone bought the lot from us at a profit of over P1 million.
In exchange, we were able to buy an old house and lot in cash, which we have fully renovated and furnished.
It is God’s will for us to live an abundant life. His Word is clear in John 10:10 — “I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance.”
That’s why when we asked for this house, we asked for something our own pockets couldn’t afford. We claimed the life of abundance He had promised.
Now it has come to pass! Alleluia! Danny Tariman (dtariman.loj@gmail.com)

Reflection: Are your prayers in accordance to His will?

Lord, thank You for revealing Your will for me. I entrust to You all my needs, and even things for my enjoyment, in Jesus’ name.

COMPANION

 1ST READING

It is fairly obvious that there are varying degrees of sin. A white lie is of a different magnitude than say, murder. This does not mean that we should not seek to abolish the lesser sins in our lives. Compromise should never be a part of our solution when it comes to sin. Let us seek to rid our lives entirely of sin, as this is the only appropriate response to God’s love for us.

1 John 5:14-21
14 Beloved: We have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, we know that what we have asked him for is ours. 16 If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly. 18 We know that anyone begotten by God does not sin; but the one begotten by God he protects, and the evil one cannot touch him. 19 We know that we belong to God, and the whole world is under the power of the evil one. 20 We also know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment to know the one who is true. And we are in the one who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Children, be on your guard against idols.

Psalm 149:1-2, 3-4, 5, 6, 9
R: The Lord takes delight in his people.
1 Sing to the Lord a new song of praise in the assembly of the faithful. 2 Let Israel be glad in their maker, let the children of Zion rejoice in their king. (R) 3 Let them praise his name in the festive dance, let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp. 4 For the Lord loves his people, and he adorns the lowly with victory. (R) 5 Let the faithful exult in glory; let them sing for joy upon their couches; 6 let the high praises of God be in their throats. 9 This is the glory of all his faithful. Alleluia. (R)

GOSPEL

John the Baptist knows he is not the Christ. Sadly, there are those who claim to be the Son of God today — they are not telling the truth. Let us avoid having visions of grandeur for our lives and focus simply on discovering and doing God’s will for us. This is what will get the work of the Gospel done and bring us closer to the glorious day when Christ will come again.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
The people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen.

John 3:22-30
22 Jesus and his disciples went into the region of Judea, where he spent some time with them baptizing. 23 John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was an abundance of water there, and people came to be baptized, 24 for John had not yet been imprisoned. 25 Now a dispute arose between the disciples of John and a Jew about ceremonial washings. 26 So they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to him.” 27 John answered and said, “No one can receive anything except what has been given from heaven.28 You yourselves can testify that I said [that] I am not the Christ, but that I was sent before him. 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; the best man, who stands and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. So this joy of mine has been made complete. 30 He must increase; I must decrease.”
Matthew 13-15
think: Let us seek to rid our lives entirely of sin as our response to God’s love for us.

SABBATH

Staying Alive!

A man takes his pet to the veterinarian after a car ran over it. He lays the animal on the table and the veterinarian examines it, listening for the heart, and solemnly says, “I’m very sorry, Mr. dela Cruz, but I’m afraid your pet is dead.” Mr. dela Cruz, very distraught now, exclaims, “How can you be sure? You haven’t done any tests or anything! I want to be sure!”
So the vet leaves the room and, after a while, reenters with a Labrador Retriever in tow. He leads the dog to the table, and the dog sniffs up and down, then turns away. The veterinarian leaves with the dog and returns with a cat, and proceeds to wave the cat back and forth over the dead pet. No response. Again, he leaves the room. By this time the pet owner has accepted the fact that his pet is indeed dead.
The veterinarian returns and says once more how sorry he is, then he presents the owner with a bill for P50,000. Mr. dela Cruz protested, “Fifty thousand pesos just to tell me my pet is dead? What kind of a rip-off is that?” And the vet replies, “Well, it would have been only P500 for the consultation, but the lab work and cat scan were extra!”
Whenever we sin, something in us dies. In the book of Genesis, Yahweh warned the first man and woman, “But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die”  (Genesis 2:17). They did eat from the tree but they did not die, physically that is. John in today’s First Reading warns, “If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death” (1 John 5:16). This is why we speak of a mortal sin. Mortal comes from the Latin word mortis, which means death. Sin kills the life of God in us. Sin compromises our life in the Spirit. And, may I add, it is something no lab work or cat scan can detect. Fr. Joel Jason

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: How is the state of your spiritual life? Do you pay enough attention to your inner life as much as you do to your physical health?

Father, in Jesus You made us a new creation. May we become more like Him and be alive in Him. Amen.
