A Journal of Joy

“The Lord said, ‘The time is coming when I will fulfil the promise that I made to the people…’ ”– Jeremiah 33:14

It’s early December 2010. Time to look back to the year that was before being engulfed in the busyness of the season. Time to reflect on promises fulfilled. The promise of a Savior sent centuries ago. The promise of dreams coming true.
This is the year that God started opening doors for me. Doors that were closed for many years. I felt then that my world had very little light coming in — only slivers of light from under a closed door or a glow at the very far end of a tunnel.
After years of struggling, my boys, orphaned of their father at ages three and one, are through with college and earning their keep. After 19 years of not knowing what to do with my career, my dream of becoming a writer is blossoming like I’ve never imagined.
The years of waiting were not in vain. I experienced life, grew in character, gained wisdom. Lessons learned now form the heart of what I write.
My heart, that sings a joyful carol to our Messiah whose birth we celebrate this month, is proof that the Lord fulfills His promises. Lella Santiago (mirellasantiago@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Do you lose hope when your prayers are not answered right away? Hold on because God is just preparing you to receive it.

Jesus, fill me with hope that the fulfillment of Your promises are on the way.

Blessed Rafael Chylinski, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

What are honesty and integrity if it is not the virtuous life? This is what the world needs to see today — men and women who place virtue, honesty and integrity above all other things. Yes, there are many things in the world that are attractive, but isn’t the knowledge that we have done the right thing attractive too? It becomes even more attractive when we realize that it is the only criterion that will matter on Judgment Day.

Jeremiah 33:14-16
14 The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah. 15 In those days, in that time, I will raise up for David a just shoot; he shall do what is right and just in the land. 16 In those days Judah shall be safe and Jerusalem shall dwell secure; this is what they shall call her: “The Lord our justice.”

Psalm 25:4-5, 8-9, 10, 14
R: To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
4 Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me your paths, 5 guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior, and for you I wait all the day. (R) 8 Good and upright is the Lord; thus he shows sinners the way. 9 He guides the humble to justice, he teaches the humble his way. (R) 10 All the paths of the Lord are kindness and constancy toward those who keep his covenant and his decrees. 14 The friendship of the Lord is with those who fear him, and his covenant, for their instruction. (R)

2ND READING

Through Paul’s writings, we discover exhortations to holiness and faith. It is this sort of life that will promote the Gospel and overcome evil. There is always a cost involved in living the truth, and often the cost involved is without sense according to the world’s priorities. This is a key point to remember: The priorities of the world and the Kingdom of God should be the same, but often they are not. Why? Because of sin. Sin has infected the priorities of the world and we have to stand against this infection.

1 Thessalonians 3:12-4:2
12 Brothers and sisters: May the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we have for you, 13 so as to strengthen your hearts, to be blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his holy ones. Amen. 4: 1 Finally, brothers and sisters, we earnestly ask and exhort you in the Lord Jesus that, as you received from us how you should conduct yourselves to please God — and as you are conducting yourselves — you do so even more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

GOSPEL

The mistaken values we confront in the world are not only attractive but also very persistent. For example, the idea to put pleasure at the heart of our lives is a very attractive suggestion. However, we must remember that there are two types of pleasure. The first is legitimate and is according to the values of the Gospel; the second is not because it is guided by the value of sin. We must learn to discern the difference between pleasure that is good and pleasure that is a result of sin.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Show us, Lord, your love; and grant us your salvation.

Luke 21:25-28, 34-36
25 Jesus said to his disciples: “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. 26 People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.” 34 “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise 35 like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth. 36 Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.”

SABBATH

His Word is His Bond

“The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel…” Jeremiah 33:14

I was surprised by a portion of a showbiz-oriented program I chanced upon. Celebrity guests were attached to a lie detector while they were being asked questions. What surprised me more is when the guest celebrity said, “It’s truly a joy and honor for me to be invited to this portion of your program.”
That struck me as odd. If I needed to be attached to a lie detector, that means my words alone simply cannot be trusted. That means I do not have the confidence of my questioners. What is honorable in that?
Yes, I know it’s a showbiz scheme to attract viewers, but could that be also an unconscious indication of the state of our relationships nowadays? We can no longer talk with another on the strength of bare words. We can only be assured when the other is attached to a lie detector.
Today we enter into the season of Advent, a season of joy and confidence for the coming birth of the promised Messiah. I was struck by the words of today’s First Reading: “The days are coming when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel.” Advent joy hinges upon the reliability of that promise. God need not be attached to a lie detector. He need not be asked to sign an advanced agreement that He would be true to His words. His word is His bond. In His words, we rest assured. Fr. Joel Jason

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Are my words trustworthy? Do I enjoy confidence from others with my fulfilled promises?

Advent is upon us because Your words are constant and trustworthy. May I share in bringing Advent joy to others. Amen.
