GREAT EXPECTATIONS

God keeps every promise he makes. He is like a shield for all who seek his protection. – Proverbs 30:5

During elementary, I was sitting on the school steps with two of my friends after dismissal. I asked Sarah, “Who’s coming to pick you up?” She replied, “Well, my dad promised he would, but he never does. So it will probably be my mom.”
Sure enough, it was Sarah’s mother who stepped down from the van that came up the driveway. “See, I told you so,” Sarah said. With that, she smiled and waved goodbye.
I turned to my other friend, Matt, and asked him what he was going to do after school. “Well, normally my dad picks me up to play basketball before dinner since he promised he’d help me practice my free-throws.”
Soon after, Matt’s dad arrived to pick him up. Matt eagerly picked up a basketball from the passenger seat before sliding in.
Now here you see that both had certain expectations from their parents and, similarly, neither were disappointed. But the true measurement of a parent’s success will always be how dependable they are to meet higher expectations more than lowered ones.
When it comes to your children, always aim for the stars. Eleanore Lee (elyo.lee@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you a person of your word? Do you try to keep every promise that you make?

Lord, give me the strength to promise only what I can deliver but to do so with unwavering commitment and wholeheartedness.

Sts. Cosmas and Damian, martyrs, pray for us.

COMPANION

 1ST READING

The sensible person will pray for sufficiency of material needs when placing his or her requests before God. Why ask for excess when we can ask God to provide for the needs of others directly rather than through us? One of the traits of a good leader is delegation; another is never taking on a job that he or she does not need to do.

Proverbs 30:5-9
5 Every word of God is tested; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. 6 Add nothing to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be exposed as a deceiver. 7 Two things I ask of you, deny them not to me before I die: 8 Put falsehood and lying far from me, give me neither poverty nor riches; provide me only with the food I need; 9 lest, being full, I deny you, saying, “Who is the Lord?” Or, being in want, I steal, and profane the name of my God.

Psalm 119:29, 72, 89, 101, 104, 163
R: Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.
29 Remove from me the way of falsehood, and favor me with your law. (R) 72 The law of your mouth is to me more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces. (R) 89 Your word, O Lord, endures forever; it is firm as the heavens. (R) 101 From every evil way I withhold my feet, that I may keep your words. (R) 104 Through your precepts I gain discernment; therefore I hate every false way. (R) 163 Falsehood I hate and abhor; your law I love. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus has given us all sorts of power and gifts. With each of these comes the responsibility to use them for the building up of the Church and not just our own little kingdoms. One of the noticeable things about the lives of the saints is that they are seemingly tireless in their capacity and desire to serve others. They never seem to lose an opportunity to give to others.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
The Kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the Gospel.

Luke 9:1-6
1 Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there. 5 And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.” 6 Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the good news and curing diseases everywhere.

SABBATH

Embrace the Word in Its Entirety

“Every Word of God is tested; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Add nothing to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be exposed as a deceiver” (Proverbs 30:5).
One time, I was celebrating Mass. The Gospel then was Matthew 18 where Peter asked Jesus whether one should forgive as many as seven times. In response Jesus said, “No, not seven times, but seventy times seven!” I was hurting that time from an offense a trusted friend inflicted on me. I must confess, I didn’t feel like reading Jesus’ response. I even felt like changing Jesus’ response to “forgiving once is enough, Peter.”
There are days like that when God’s Word makes real demands on you and you feel like adding or subtracting or changing altogether God’s Word. But the Word of God is the Word of God. As today’s First Reading emphasizes, “Every Word of God is tested... add nothing to his words....” A temptation to all believers is to domesticate God’s message — to make it convenient, less demanding, non-exacting. The Israelites of Moses’ times complained about the “demands” Yahweh was expecting from them. What did they do? They carved their own god, a molten calf — a god that they can manipulate, a “mute” god who will not make demands from them.
We still have that mentality in our day and age. Instead of conforming ourselves to God’s image, we want to conform God into our image. Be it in the area of religion, work, public life, or sex life, we manipulate God’s Word to our own convenience. Yes, God became man. But it did not stop there. God became man so that man might become like God. Let us not invert the process. God is to be trusted. He is Father and everything He proposes is all to our best interest. Fr. Joel Jason

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: As a hearer of God’s Words, do you sometimes add or subtract something from the words of Scripture? In what area of your life do you usually “edit” the efficacy of God’s Word? Pray for healing in that area.

“Every Word of God is tested; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Amen.”
