One God, One Goal

And in him all things hold together. – Colossians 1:17

I was privileged to become HR Manager of the pioneer in outdoor advertising in the Philippines three years ago. I believe that more than my skills and experience, the owners invited me to join because we shared the same faith and values. Although not Catholics, they were also devout Christians who strove to live out their faith and values as businessmen. I discovered this as we discussed the scope of my responsibilities and their expectations. They wanted me to help them build a company culture based on Christian values on top of setting up HR systems and improving employee skills. They wanted to pay me to do something I’d even do for free!
We didn’t always agree. We had disagreements on strategies and procedures but our common belief and relationship with Jesus Christ kept the Management Team and the Board united. I remember when typhoon Milenyo hit Metro Manila and affected many of our structures. Our faith in Christ held us together during the storm.
It wasn’t a perfect organization but it surely was one of the best work environments I’ve had the privilege to be a part of. Teresa Gumap-as Dumadag (teregmps@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
What holds me and my family, company or group together?

Lord Jesus, may Your Holy Spirit be upon us to unite us in Your love.

COMPANION

1st READING

St. Paul describes Jesus as the “firstborn of all creation.” This does not mean that Jesus was created but rather that He has a preeminent place as the God-man over all creation. In fact, all creation is for Him and is shaped in His image. All the fullness of God dwells in Jesus. When we encounter Jesus,  we truly encounter God in the flesh.

Colossians 1:15-20
15 Brothers and sisters: Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he himself might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven.

Psalms 100:1, 2, 3, 4, 5
R: Come with joy into the presence of the Lord.
1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; 2 serve the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful song. (R) 3 Know that the LORD is God; he made us, his we are; his people, the flock he tends. (R) 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, his  courts with praise; give thanks to him; bless his name. (R) 5 For he is good, the LORD, whose kindness endures forever, and his faithfulness, to all generations. (R)

The Pharisees fasted twice a week and saw this as an important part of their spiritual practice. They are scandalized that Jesus, a prominent rabbi and leader with a huge following of Jews, does not insist that His disciples fast. Jesus says that He is ushering in not just another pious Jewish association but a whole new people of God. The coming of the Kingdom of God is more fully realized in feasting and joyful celebrations than in fasting. Yet later, when Jesus is risen, the disciples and the church would practice fasting.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Luke 5:33-39
33 The scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, “The disciples of John the Baptist fast often and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same; but yours eat and drink.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” 36 And he also told them a parable. “No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one. Otherwise, he will tear the new and the piece from it will not match the old cloak. 37 Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined. 38 Rather, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one who has been drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’ ”

SABBATH

Changing For The Better, Not To The Letter

Jesus came teaching and performing miracles. The people were astonished at the newness of His teachings. Some were able to accept them, but others could not. For the Jews, the Torah, the laws given through Moses, was the standard. But the law had developed and its number increased since the time of Moses. In the process, the spirit was lost and had not served as intended. In the words of Jesus, “Sabbath was made for man and not man for Sabbath.”
In the Gospel today, Jesus was pointing out their need to go back to the spirit of the law. No one knows the law better than Him. Jesus wanted them to change, not to something really new, but to go back to the original purpose of the law. The parable of the old and new cloth and the old and new wineskin illustrates the tension He was creating with the leaders.
When I was still in formation, a new rector came and immediately made changes in our seminary life. Many of us reacted, saying that he should have settled for a while before effecting the changes. But because he was the rector, it was within his authority to do so. We tried to adapt to the changes. At that time, I was the beadle, the seminarian head of the community. One day, I felt I had studied too much and needed a break. After an afternoon class, I asked one of my classmates to play basketball with me. It was 4:30 p.m. and our schedule required that we must all be in by 5:30 p.m. to prepare for the evening prayers. We thought we could make it but we got engrossed with our game and forgot the time. We finished at 5:45 p.m. When we entered the seminary, the rector was there standing, staring at me. He asked why I was not following schedules and even said that I was setting a bad example for the other seminarians. I told him that I was stressed and I needed to release it, which was more important than keeping the time.
Schedules are guides in order to get the best formation. Being healthy and conditioned are parts of that formation. I fully respect the schedule but I believe the situation called for fulfilling the spirit of the law than a violation of the law. Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
Do I take the time to check the spirit of the law before taking someone to account for a violation of a law?

Lord, help me to always see the spirit of the law over and above the letter of the law.

St. Brocard, pray for us.
