EYES OF FAITH
 
“Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command, I will lower the nets.” – Luke 5:5
 
There is a story about World War II written by Robert Schuller. Sweeping across Germany at the end of the war, Allied forces searched farms and houses looking for snipers. At one abandoned house, amidst almost a heap of rubble, searchers with flashlights found their way to a basement. There, on the crumbling wall, a victim of the Holocaust had scratched a Star of David. And beneath it, in rough lettering, this message: “I believe in the sun — even when it does not shine; I believe in love — even when it is not shown; I believe in God — even when He does not speak.”
In my life, there are things that I have sometimes left to chance. On the contrary, there are other circumstances which I had planned for every step of the way and took full control of. But how much of my decisions have I left to faith?
How many instances did I say, “Lord, take over, I have labored with everything I have and have hit blank walls. Whatever You want me to do, I will follow”?
I think this balance is crucial: I do my part and allow God to do His. Then and only then can I walk and grow in faith. Lallaine Gogna (lallygogna@yahoo.com)

The wisdom of this age is mere foolishness when compared to the wisdom of God. Unfortunately there is virtually an entire world out there that either does not believe this or simply ignores it. The entire advertising industry is based upon worldly wisdom and desires, and seems to have a hold on the vast majority of the people of the world. You need this or that latest gizmo; you will be beautiful if you have this brand of clothes, and cool if you own that brand of sunglasses. These are all smokescreens and distractions. You will be cool and beautiful, fulfilled and happy if you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
 
1 Corinthians 3:18-23
18 Brothers and sisters: Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you considers himself wise in this age, let him become a fool so as to become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God, for it is written: “He catches the wise in their own ruses,” 20 and again: “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.” 21 So let no one boast about human beings, for everything belongs to you, 22 Paul or Apollos or Kephas, or the world or life or death, or the present or the future: all belong to you, 23 and you to Christ, and Christ to God.

1 The LORD’s are the earth and its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it. 2 For he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. (R) 3 Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD? Or who may stand in his holy place? 4 He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean, who desires not what is vain. (R) 5 He shall receive a blessing from the LORD, a reward from God his savior. 6 Such is the race that seeks for him, that seeks the face of the God of Jacob. (R)
 
G O S P E L
 
Simon recognizes that Jesus is a holy man and asks Him to leave his presence because he knows that he, Simon, is unworthy to stand before Him. The same is true for us. None of us is worthy to stand before Jesus. Yet this does not matter to Jesus. His love can overcome all obstacles and that is what He wants to happen. It is up to us whether or not we want to accept the offer of His love. We all know Simon responded positively and became an apostle and, ultimately, the first Pope.
 
Luke 5:1-11
1 While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. 2 He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. 4 After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,  “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” 5 Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” 6 When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. 7 They signalled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” 9 For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, 10 and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.

think: You will be cool and beautiful, fulfilled and happy if you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

Donation vs . Self–giving
 
To fund their oncoming projects for the poor, the Pastoral Committee of San Carlos Seminary where I am a resident professor and formator, held a garage sale. They asked all resident priests and seminarians to gather things that they do not need anymore and donate them to be sold at the garage sale.
Days before the event, I looked through my stuff, segregated the things I no longer need and put them in a box. Very swiftly, I collected a boxful of miscellaneous items. When I finished, I noticed that the things I gathered looked like things I was ready to throw at the garbage can. It exposed to me the quality of my giving. I gathered up things that I do not need, not things that others might need. I realized I was not doing an act of charity — it was more an act of waste disposal.
I began again, this time keeping in mind to set aside things that others might need, things that would still be useful to them, even things that I still would want to keep for myself. It was hard to part with many of them. When you want to dispose of things you do not need anymore, it’s easy to fill up a box. But when you decide to give away things that are still valuable that others might need, you’ll discover that parting is so difficult, as I experienced. That is the essence of giving — not easy to do but very liberating.
When we “give up” things we do not need, that’s a donation. When we give up things that we still need but give them up anyway because others might have a greater need of them, that is self-giving.
In today’s Gospel, Luke tells us that the disciples did not give up things that they no longer needed. On the contrary, “they left everything and followed him” (Luke 5:11). It was a real gift of self. It was no mere donation. It was an act of self-giving.Fr. Joel O. Jason
 
Reflection Question:
There’s only one vowel in the word “gift” — it is “i.” What is the character of your giving? Is it mere donation or self-giving?
 
I have heard it said, “One can give without loving. But one cannot love without giving.” Lord Jesus, inspire us to love as You love, to give as You give — freely, totally, faithfully, fruitfully. Amen.
