EASTER SUNDAY

LOOK HEAVENWARD

Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. – Colossians3: 2

How would you feel if your daughter died in your arms?
My friend Rowin went through that. He related the anguish that he and his wife endured as he held Maia. Life-shattering is too mild to describe it.
Reflecting on these events, he imagined God asking him: “Am I less of a God for taking your daughter away from you?”
Rowin knew the correct answer but the hurt ran so deep. If God had asked him as his baby girl breathed her last, he admits he would have faltered. His thoughts were trained on the temporary.
After asking for forgiveness, he looked to the eternal. As understanding came by God’s grace, he focused his mind on the permanent, and looked forward to the time when he could embrace Maia again. There they can worship the Lord together in heaven.
There is life beyond this mortal shell. That is where we should set our sights on. Jun Asis (mabuting.balita@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Focus your eyes on the eternal. All earthly things will fade. Only heaven is forever.

Lord, help us remember that our earthly existence is not our permanent state. May we live life forward-looking to our heavenly home.

COMPANION

1st READING

The proclamation of the Gospel is the center of the life of the Church. Its truth is something we must all live now that we have heard and accepted it. For the Early Church this was a new experience. Maybe there is still much to be done before our own lives truly reflect these truths as well. God is a patient God, but we should not test His patience. Let us pray for the grace to live our faith to the full.

Acts 10:34a, 37-43
34 Peter proceeded to speak and said: 37 “You know what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39 We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. 40 This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, 41 not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43 To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Psalm 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23
R: This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.
1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. 2 Let the house of Israel say, “His mercy endures forever.” (R) 16 “The right hand of the LORD has struck with power; the right hand of the LORD is exalted.” 17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. (R) 22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 23 By the LORD has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. (R)

2nd READING

Living the life of the Gospel, however we want to express it, will be a lifelong challenge all of us will face. How successfully we achieve this goal will be a sign of our character, or in the words of the poets, “the making of the man (or woman)” we happen to be. Let us rely upon the grace and strength of the Holy Spirit as we take up this challenge each day.

Colossians 3:1-4 (or 1 Corinthians 5:6b-8)
1 Brothers and sisters: If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.

G O S P E L
Jesus is risen from the dead and He has appeared to the apostles. This is one of the earliest kerygmatic proclamations. Let us realize that Jesus has also appeared to us in the form of our faith and in His Word through the Scriptures. We might not have physically seen Him, but we know just as surely that He has indeed risen from the dead.

John 20:1-9 (or Matthew 28:1-10 or Luke 24:13-35)
1 On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” 3 So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. 4 They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; 5 he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. 6 When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, 7 and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. 8 Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. 9 For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

SABBATH

THE GRAVE IS EMPTY

It must have been one of the most remarkable, if not the most remarkable, experiences of human history — namely, going to the tomb and discovering that the body of Jesus is no longer there. And to make the experience even more extraordinary, it appears that Jesus has come back to life. I do not think anything could prepare anyone to face such an event without causing absolute and complete astonishment. Yet, this is what we celebrate in today’s liturgy.
As one relatively modern Church hymn puts it, ‘… death could not hold him down; he is risen!’ This is the proclamation of the Church today and it is a truth that has ramifications for all humanity, not just Christians, because the salvation Jesus wins today is for all men and women of all time. But, I hear you say, how can this be if people do not believe or know the truth? The simple answer to this rebuttal is that it is up to us, who believe and know the truth, to proclaim it to those who do not. This is why Jesus instituted the Church, not so that we can have a cozy club to pat one another on the back, but to stand up straight in the market place and proclaim the Good News that Jesus is risen from the dead and your sins are forgiven.
If we want to experience the fullness of the gift of salvation, we have to begin sharing the Good News with others. Let me assure you, there is no better feeling than that of having shared the Good News with someone and experiencing them undergo a conversion of heart to faith in Jesus Christ. More and more today, we need men and women willing to sacrifice their own desires for pleasure and a comfortable life in order to work for the goal of seeing heaven more populated than it is at the moment. This work is the most satisfying work anyone can do. Let us give God a chance to use us to bring about His Kingdom in the lives of others here on earth. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How often have I shared the Good News of salvation with someone who needs to hear it? Have I missed opportunities to do this through fear or laziness?

Lord Jesus, I ask forgiveness for my failure to proclaim the Gospel in the past and recommit myself to doing it every day of my life.

St. Benedict the Black, pray for us.
